BIRMINGHAM POLICE NOW TRYING TO FIND MULTIPLE SHOOTERS THAT LED OUT A HAIL OF GUNFIRE ON THIRD AVENUE WEST. INVESTIGATORS SAY 42 SHOTS RANG OUT AFTER 3 A.M. BY THE SHELL GAS STATION. POLICE SAY THERE WAS LIKELY MORE THAN ONE SHOOTER WHO WAITED FOR THE VICTIM TO LEAVE THE CONVENIENCE STORE PARKING LOT. POLICE SAY ANOTHER PERSON WAS CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE. FIRST RESPONDERS TOOK THEM. THAT PERSON WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WITH LIFE THREATENING INJURIES, AND THEY WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL BY A PRIVATE VEHICLE.
1 person dead, another brought to hospital with life-threatening injuries after early morning shooting
After 3 a.m. Saturday morning, four ShotSpotter notifications alerted Birmingham police officers about gunfire outside of a gas station on 800 block of 3rd Avenue.Police said Johndarius Ward, 26, of Birmingham was killed, and another is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.ShotSpotter picked up a total of 42 rounds. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Ward shot and unresponsive inside a car. Birmingham Fire Rescue Services pronounced him dead.While officers were still on the scene, they learned another victim was taken to Princeton by a private vehicle. BPD tells WVTM 13 that in the early stages of its investigation, “the victim was attempting to leave the parking lot of the convenience store when an unknown suspect who we believe was lying and waiting, began firing shots into the victim’s vehicle fatally wounding the victim.”Investigators believe there was someone else firing shots in the parking lot, too, and the second victim was caught in the crossfire. Currently, there’s no one in custody. This spring, on May 5, David Westbrook, of Tennessee, was killed, and multiple people were injured in a shootout outside of the same gas station. The department’s ShotSpotter system tracked more than 150 rounds fired that Sunday night.A few weeks later, Armonta Davis turned himself in to police after the department released photos of a person of interest in the shooting.
