An investigation is underway after a person was killed Monday night in west Birmingham.

Birmingham police and Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded about 6:30 p.m. to a report of a person shot on Huntington Lane in the Huntington Hills neighborhood off Cherry Avenue. Neighbors said the area is usually quiet with no problems.

The victim, a young adult male, was pronounced dead on the scene. Multiple family members gathered at the location.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the preliminary investigation indicates that there was a small gathering at the house. The victim and the unknown suspect were in a room playing video games.

The other people at the home then heard shots and the suspect fled the scene. He had not been taken into custody as of 8:30 p.m.

The victim is the city’s 33rd homicide in 2023, and the second to take place on Monday.

Of the city’s homicides this year, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside agency and three others have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 44 homicides including the 33 in Birmingham.
