1-year-old boy receives lifesaving donation from a family member

FIVE LEADING THE WAY. ONLY ON WLWT. A ONE YEAR OLD BOY IN FORT MITCHELL IS GETTING A LIFE SAVING ORGAN DONATION IN THE NEW YEAR. THAT’S RIGHT. AND IT’S COMING FROM SOMEONE VERY SPECIAL. HIS FATHER, WLWT NEWS FIVE’S LINDSEY STONE JOINS US WITH THIS VERY SWEET STORY. LINDSEY. YEAH. SORRY. WE REALLY NEED TO HEAR ABOUT TODAY, ESPECIALLY SO AT HER 20 WEEK ANATOMY SCAN. TAYLOR MOREHEAD WAS TOLD SOMETHING WASN’T RIGHT. IT’S BEEN A SCARY AND VERY DIFFICULT JOURNEY OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS. SINCE HER SON, BAKER WAS BORN. BUT FINALLY HE IS GETTING THE LIFE SAVING KIDNEY TRANSPLANT HE NEEDS AND THE DONOR HIS DAD. YOU’RE EXCITED BECAUSE YOU HAVE A NEW BABY AND YOU JUST DON’T REALLY KNOW WHAT THE FUTURE IS GOING TO HOLD. BAKER MOORHEAD’S FIRST FEW MONTHS OF LIFE WERE SPENT IN THE NICU. HE WAS BORN IN ALMOST KIDNEY FAILURE. IT WAS LIKE A STAGE FOUR KIDNEY DISEASE. ONE OF BAKER’S KIDNEYS WAS REMOVED AND HE BEGAN WEEKLY DIALYSIS. THAT’S WHEN THE SEARCH FOR A DONOR KIDNEY BEGAN. IT’S BEEN REALLY HARD. REALLY, REALLY HARD. AFTER MONTHS OF WAITING, A CALL, THERE WAS A MATCH. THE DONOR. DADA. THE END GOAL WAS JUST TO GET HIM A NEW KIDNEY. BUT TO KNOW THAT IT WAS COMING FOR ME. BAKER’S DAD, ALEX, NOW SAVING HIS LIFE. EQUAL PARTS TERRIFYING, BUT EQUAL PARTS EXCITING. BECAUSE WE KNEW WHAT WAS COMING FROM THE VERY BEGINNING. AND WE KNOW THAT THIS IS THE NEXT STEP. I’M SCARED. I’M. I’M VERY, VERY SCARED. I MEAN, I’M GOING TO HAVE MY, LIKE, NUMBER ONE PERSON UNDER SURGERY. MAJOR SURGERY. PLUS MY BABY AT THE SAME TIME. SO THAT’S SCARY. BUT I KNOW HIS LIFE IS JUST GOING TO DRASTICALLY CHANGE FOR THE BETTER. MOMMY. WHILE HIS JOURNEY ISN’T OVER AFTER THE SURGERY, ONE YEAR OLD BAKER HAS ALREADY PROVEN HE’S ONE TOUGH KID. RESILIENT IS I. YOU KNOW, WE CAN’T THINK OF A BETTER WORD YET, BUT HE DOESN’T LET IT DOESN’T LET EVERYTHING THAT’S GOING ON WITH HIM HOLD HIM BACK. BECAUSE THIS IS A A LIFELONG DISEASE FOR HIM. THE TRANSPLANT DOESN’T CURE ANYTHING. IT JUST IS A MILESTONE THAT GETS US TO THE NEXT STEP. JUST A FEW WEEKS BEFORE HE TURNS TWO, BAKER WILL UNDERGO THE TRANSPLANT ALONGSIDE HIS DAD. HE’S GOING TO BE A LOT OF KIDNEY, I THINK. I THINK WE MEASURED BASED ON HOW HIGH HE IS. I THINK HE’LL BE ABOUT ONE EIGHTH KIDNEY BASED ON HOW BIG IT IS AND HOW TALL HE IS. FATHER AND SON DONNING MATCHING SCARS AND THE REMARKABLE STORY OF A FATHER’S LOVE THAT SAVED HIS SON’S LIFE, WILL FOREVER HAVE A BOND OF OF BETWEEN US THAT GOES A LITTLE BIT MORE THAN JUST FATHER AND SON. THE SURGERY WILL TAKE PLACE ON JANUARY 14TH AT CINCINNATI CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL, AND THE FAMILY ASKING FOR PRAYERS FOR BOTH BAKER AND ALEX AND THEIR RECOVERY. AND ACTUALLY, INSTEAD OF DONATIONS OR MEALS FOR THEMSELVES, THEY’RE ACTUALLY ASKING FOR THE COMMUNITY TO DONATE IN BAKER’S NAME TO THE DIALYSIS CENTER AT CINCINNATI CHILDREN’S THAT WILL HELP SUPPORT FAMILIES LIKE THE MOREHEAD’S, WHO HAVE SPENT HOURS EVERY SINGLE WEEK. AND YOU CAN FIND THAT LINK ON OUR WEBSITE AT WLWT.COM. REALLY INCREDIBLE STORY THERE. AND I THINK IF YOU ASK MOST PARENTS, THEY’LL SAY PARENTHOOD IS ABOUT GIVING, BUT YOU GENERALLY THINK IT’S LIFE LESSONS AND VALUES. THIS IS SOMETHING ON A WHOLE OTHER LEVEL. AND YOU KNOW, HE WAS SO EXCITED TO DO IT. I WAS LIKE, ARE YOU NERVOUS? HE’S LIKE, NO, WE’RE READY. WE’RE READY. AND YOU CAN SEE JUST HOW EXCITED BAKER IS TOO. HE’S GOT SO MUCH ENERGY. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THEY SAY HE WILL HAVE MORE ENERGY AFTER THIS SURGERY. WE LOVE TO HEAR THAT. LINDSAY, THANKS SO MUCH FOR A GREAT STORY. ALL RIGHT. IN OTHER NEWS, NEW ON WLWT. RINGING IN THE N

FORT MITCHELL, Ky. —

A 1-year-old boy in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, is getting a lifesaving organ donation in the new year, and it's coming from someone special: his father.

“You're excited because you have a new baby, and you just don't really know what the future is going to hold,” said Taylor Morehead.

Her son, Baker, spent his first few months of life in the neonatal intensive care unit. “He was born in almost kidney failure,” said Taylor Morehead. “It was like a Stage 4 kidney disease.”

One of Baker's kidneys was removed, and he began weekly dialysis. That's when the search for a new kidney began.

After months of waiting, there was a match.

“The end goal was just to get him a new kidney, but to know that it was coming from me,” said Alex Morehead, Baker’s dad.

Alex Morehead is now saving his son's life.

“Equal parts terrifying, but equal parts exciting because we knew was coming from the very beginning,” Alex Morehead said.

“I'm scared,” Taylor Morehead said. “I'm going to have my, like, No. 1 person under surgery, major surgery, plus my baby at the same time.”

While his journey will not be over after the surgery, Baker has already proven he's one tough kid. “This is a, a lifelong disease for him,” Alex Morehead said. “The transplant is -- doesn't cure anything. It just is a milestone that gets us to the next step.”

Just a few weeks before he turns 2 years old, Baker will undergo the transplant alongside his dad.

“He's going to be a lot of kidney, I think,” Alex Morehead said with a laugh. “I think we measured based on how high he is. I think he'll be about, you know, one-eighth kidney, based on how big it is and how tall he is.”

The father and son will don matching scars and have a remarkable story to tell.

“We'll forever have a bond of a, of between us that, you know, goes a little bit more than just father and son,” Alex Morehead said.

Instead of donating to the family, the Moreheads are asking people to donate to the dialysis center at Cincinnati Children’s. You can do so by clicking on this link.
