The end of the year means the beginning of New Year’s resolutions. Luckily, we live in a city full of great restaurants, fitness studios and more to keep you thriving in 2025. Plus, Birmingham is full of supportive people to hold you accountable.
Check out a few ways to make—and maintain—healthier habits next year.
1. Try a new (+ healthier) restaurant in Birmingham
Switch up your routine or branch out of your regular eating-out spots and try something new—Birmingham is certainly not short of amazing restaurants.
Here are a few of our favorite local spots that offer healthy and yummy food. (One of my favorites is Chopt!)
For those of you (myself included) who want to save money in 2025, try some recipes from CHEWS Wisely Alabama in your own home!
Or if you’re searching for something light to bring to your holiday parties, check out three healthy swaps you can make to avoid heavy and starchy party foods.
2. Find a workout routine you love
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama collabed with National Fitness Campaign (NFC) Fitness Courts to provide free access to equitable exercise opportunities throughout the state.
Designed for people of all abilities ages 14+, each workout court is adaptable to all fitness levels to allow participants to exercise at their own pace. Plus—the free courts offer an inexpensive and holistic alternative to traditional gym memberships.
There are 18 fitness courts open across Alabama. Here are four you can visit around the Greater Birmingham Area:
- Fultondale, AL, Black Creek Park: 900 Rowe Drive, Fultondale, AL 35217
- Homewood, AL, Homewood Athletic Complex: 121 W Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209
- Hoover, AL, Veterans Park State: 4800 Valleydale Road, Birmingham, AL 35242
- Leeds, AL, Leeds Memorial Park: 1159 Montevallo Road SW, Leeds, AL 35094
Psst, the state’s 19th fitness court is coming to Kimberly, Alabama on January 9.
3. Meet new friends + invest in the Bham community
As a South Alabama transplant, I fell in love with Birmingham once I met more of the incredible people that live here.
Surrounding yourself with people who are driven, productive and reaching for similar goals is a great way to create community. These are your people. They’ll help you when you’re down and stand by you through all seasons of your life.
Here is what BCBS of Alabama suggests when looking for community:
- Dig deeper into existing friendships by sharing hobbies + activities.
- Find a job, hobby or activity you enjoy + do more of it.
- Seek ways to support others through community service.
We all know Birmingham is an inclusive city. If you haven’t seen this first-hand—here are a few ways to get involved.
