If you think Spin Doctors seem frozen in time, well, it’s time to think again.
The ‘90s rock band led by Chris Barron has some new music to share, via its first studio album in 12 years.
“Face Full of Cake” is set for release April 11 on Capitol Records. Twelve tracks are included on the record, including the first single, “Still a Gorilla.” Released on Jan. 17, it showcases a “noisier, heavier sound” for the band, according to a publicist.
Spin Doctors, formed in 1988 in New York City, have six previous studio albums to their credit. The band is best known for its 1991 album “Pocket Full of Kryptonite,” and the hit singles “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong" and “Two Princes.”
“Spin Doctors fans are going to be knocked out by this new record,” Barron said via a press release. “It’s got that vintage Spin Doctors sound of ear candy and denser material that harkens back to ‘Pocket Full Of Kryptonite’ but with years of experience under our belts.”

“Face Full of Cake” will be album No. 7 for Spin Doctors, and the follow-up to 2013’s “If the River Was Whiskey.” Much of the band’s music has fused power pop with blues, funk and a witty, jam-band sensibility.
“The upcoming LP marks their debut on Capitol Records and the first Spin Doctors record with new bassist Jack Daley who joined the band full-time in 2021,” a press release says. “‘Face Full of Cake’ can trace its origins back to the early days of the pandemic, but after several writing sessions — including time spent at the Vermont studio space of Phish’s Mike Gordon — and intimate hangs between guitarist Eric Schenkman and Barron, the album began to fully take shape. Recorded at Daley’s Asbury Park, N.J., studio, the project has an exploratory and easy energy that came from a laidback and low-pressure recording process."
Here’s the full track listing:
- “Boombox”
- “Rock ‘N’ Roll Heaven”
- “Still A Gorilla”
- “The Heart Of The Highway”
- “Double Parked”
- “I Liked You Better When Your Butt Was Big”
- “The Buddha On The Lawn”
- “She Don’t Love Me Anymore (Anymore)”
- “I’m The Man (You Got)”
- “While You’re Holding The Moon (Over Me)”
- “She Stands Alone”
- “When You Got Turmoil In Your Mind”
The band’s current lineup features three founding members — singer Barron, guitarist Schenkman and drummer Aaron Comess — plus bassist Daley, who replaced Mark White.
Spin Doctors currently have a handful of tour dates on the agenda for 2025, including an album release party on April 12 at the Brooklyn Bowl. The band also plans a four-night residency at the Egyptian Theatre in Park City, Utah, June 5-8.
The band has played in Alabama over the years, including a concert in 1993 at Birmingham’s Alabama Theatre, the 1999 Do Dah Day festival and the 2007 Schaeffer Eye Center Crawfish Boil.
