Afternoon highs reach the 50s and clouds steadily increase into the evening ahead of our next chance of rain.Wednesday evening is mostly cloudy with light rain arriving from the west after dark lasting into early Thursday morning. The rain showers will be light and most communities will pick up less than one half inch of rain.Some showers will linger into Thursday morning, but we don't expect a soaking wet commute. The best chance for rain holds south of the Birmingham Metro. Alabama needs some rain because are still in an "extreme" drought, according to Alabama's state climatologist, Dr. John Christy.Birmingham is missing over seven inches of rainfall for 2024, and there is very little in the forecast this week. Most of us will get less than a quarter-inch of rainfall as this week's system passes on Wednesday night and Thursday.ARCTIC AIR ARRIVES THURSDAY Another shot of cold, Arctic air will hit Alabama Thursday and temperatures will vary widely through the afternoon. Some north Alabama communities like Huntsville, Arab, and Cullman may have a hard time climbing out of the 30s. Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Clanton will have a chance to warm into the low 50s before the colder air blows in from the north. Temperatures will tumble very quickly Thursday once the Arctic air arrives.FRIGID ON FRIDAY Friday will be the coldest morning of the week. Morning lows drop into the teens and 20s. This means a hard freeze is likely in some communities. Be sure you are following the cold weather precautions.The temperature on the thermometer alone is not the full story Friday morning. There will also be a north wind adding to the chill factor. The 'feels like' temperature could be as a low as 10-15 degrees at times on Friday morning. That is cold enough to prompt a cold weather advisory and we will be monitoring for the advisory to be issued in the coming days. Friday afternoon we warm into the 40s under a mainly sunny sky.WEEKEND WEATHERAs of now, Saturday appears to be a dry day. The morning begins with a freeze, but we warm into the 50s under a partly cloudy sky during the afternoon. Sunday morning is milder with lows in the upper 30s. Clouds are likely during the day with a chance for some light showers later in the day. The high on Sunday will reach near 60 degrees. STORMY NEXT WEEK?Uncertainty is not a word we like, but it is a word we must use from time to time in forecasting the weather. Our very fast-paced weather pattern will give forecast guidance (computer models) fits from the weekend into next week, but there are a few things we can already see as possibilities (none of them are snow):(1) Rain and thunderstorms could set up shop over Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee for the first half of the week, giving us a very good soaking of 1 to 2 inches of rain. (2) Rain and thunderstorms could set up in such a way that some severe weather could develop around Monday and Tuesday.(3) Another stormy period will probably develop late in the week or over the weekend, and at this point, some strong storms may again impact parts of Alabama and neighboring states.Those are not sure things, but they are things we will surely be watching over the next few days.
