The school year is wrapping up and families are hitting the road to kick off summer break."I go back and forth to Huntsville," driver Destinee McGhee says. McGhee is paying an average of $3.10 a gallon for gas right now, according to AAA Alabama. However, living in downtown Birmingham, she says prices can often be 10 to 20 cents higher than the average price. "So, what I would do is to go to the countryside where it's a little cheaper," McGhee points out. "Like $3 or $2.99 or whatever to get some gas because gas around here, like in the city, is really high. And as a college student, you know how it is with our finances.Believe it or not, prices these days are actually lower than a year ago when AAA Alabama says the average price for a gallon of regular was $4.31. The question right now is: what is the upcoming summer looking like?"I think we'll see it go up a little bit more between now and Memorial Day, then it will probably kind of stabilize," according to Clay Ingram with AAA Alabama. But lately, some people have still noticed an occasional overnight price jump at some stations. Going up as much as 20 or 30 cents at a time. "To see a big you know, 20 or 30 cent a gallon jump overnight at any station is unusual and quite honestly unwarranted right now," Ingram adds. "Probably somebody just looking to take advantage of the number of people traveling for Memorial Day to kind of pad their profit margins over the next few weeks."One way experts say you can help drive prices down is by shopping around and buying the cheapest gas you can find. Some drivers say they simply avoid driving whenever they can to help save."I prefer the scooters around Birmingham, for real, to get around," McGhee says. Knowing prices will continue to fluctuate.
