Alabama Attorney General's Office to prosecute Carlee Russell case

Legal experts say it is unusual for an Attorney General to prosecute misdemeanor cases, although they say the Carlee Russell case is an unusual one at the same time. Hoover police chief Nick Derzis says he asked Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall's office to step in because of the attention the case has received over the last couple of weeks. Marshall calls Hoover PD's work on the case "monumental." Marshall says his office will now move forward with putting together a team to handle the charges against Russell. The charges include falsely reporting to law enforcement authorities and falsely reporting an incident. Marshall is quick to add this is not a "victimless crime." "There are significant hours spent," A.G. Marshall explains. "Resources expended, as a result of this investigation. Not only that, but the many and women who are civilians that wore the yellow vests. Hot afternoon and evening looking for someone they thought was abducted, trying to be of assistance."Marshall says his office intends to fully prosecute the Carlee Russell case. Birmingham trial lawyer Tommy James tells WVTM 13 while it is unusual for the A.G.'s Office to prosecute misdemeanor cases, this particular case is "extraordinary." James adds while the charges may not be what some hoped for, they are still serious charges and ones the A.G.'s Office is equipped to prosecute.

Legal experts say it is unusual for an Attorney General to prosecute misdemeanor cases, although they say the Carlee Russell case is an unusual one at the same time.
