For years, the traffic congestion on US 280—particularly near The Summit and Grandview Medical Center at rush hour—has been so absurd that it has become a meme.
To help alleviate that congestion, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) plans to begin widening a portion of US 280 as early as Spring 2025.
ALDOT to expand US 280 as early as Spring 2025
According to ALDOT Public Information Officer Linda Crockett, the busiest section of US 280—near Overton Road—averages nearly 105,000 vehicles per day. ALDOT is hopeful that additional lanes will ease congestion, increase efficiency along the highway and add to its safety.
The project will consist of:
- Widening US 280 with an additional lane in both directions between Lakeshore Drive to I-459.
- Resurfacing both northbound and southbound sections of US-280 between Rosedale Drive and Lakeshore Drive.
- Replacement of the Pump House Road Bridge.
ALDOT is finalizing its plans for the US 280 expansion and aims to take bids for the project by January 31, 2025.
Work on the expansion will begin sometime in Spring 2025.
