"The Addams Family" 28 Years Later: E! News Rewind

During a terrifying situation, Anjelica Huston received an unexpected call from a special person from her past.

The Addams Family alum says her former partner of 17 years, Jack Nicholson, reached out to her as she was fleeing a wildfire that erupted not far from her Los Angeles home.

“I was in a car with three dogs, two cats, and the housekeeper," Huston told The Guardian in an interview published Feb. 21, "and he called and asked if I was all right, and if I had someplace I was staying."

The 73-year-old continued, "That’s the bottom line with he and I—when the chips are down, he’s there."

Huston's home did not suffer damage from the Palisades Fire that erupted Jan. 7 and destroyed more than 6,500 structures, including several houses located just two streets away from hers, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

"My house almost burned down. It came very, very close," Huston said, adding that she has since moved into her other residence, a ranch.

Huston dated Nicholson, 87, for 17 years until 1990 and have kept in touch since their breakup.

"I loved him," she said. "I think in the world that I was living in, it wasn’t disrespectful. It was how he was, and it wasn't so personal. I think as soon as I clocked that, it was all right, I knew how to protect myself. It didn’t make me happy, but I knew what I was doing."

In her 2014 memoir Watch Me, the actress wrote that she ended her relationship with Nicholson after he revealed to her that he had fathered a baby with another woman. In 1992, two years after the breakup, Huston married sculptor Robert Graham. He died in 2008 at age 70 after a long illness.

Huston has rarely spoken about her longtime romance with the actor in the press but did write about their relationship in her memoirs. In Watch Me, she said they first met in 1973 and he gave her several nicknames, including "Fab," "Toot" and "Mine."

She described one of their first dates, which took place at the since-demolished Hollywood Park race track, noting that he wore a "beautiful cream wool suit with an American flag in rhinestones pinned to his lapel" and "got a hard time at the gate to the grandstand for not wearing a tie." She said he gave her $50 betting money, and she returned it to him after winning $67.

The two enjoyed many trips together, with Anjelica writing, "The first time I saw Las Vegas was through the open window of a limousine with Jack."

The two starred together in movies such as The Postman Always Rings Twice and Prizzi's Honor, the latter of which earned Huston her first Oscar. Nicholson was by her side as she was announced Best Supporting Actress at the 1986 Academy Awards. Ten years prior, Huston had accompanied the actor to the 1976 ceremony, where he won his first Oscar for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

The went in to working together again after their breakup, costarring in Sean Penn's 1995 film The Crossing Guard, in which the actress plays the ex-wife of Nicholson's character. In 2013, Huston and the actor reunited at a party celebrating the release of her 2013 memoir, A Story Lately Told.

"Jack's somebody that I want in my life," Huston said in the book. "I wouldn't be happy not having him in my life."
