Internship success stories

Richard Feueurriegel, Actuarial Assistant

Actuarial Assistant, ProtectiveRichard Feueurriegel, former Protective internship participant. (Richard Feuerriegel)

Richard has been working at Protective full time since June of 2023. After interning during the summer of 2022, he worked part time during his senior year at Auburn until starting his full-time role.

Currently, he works as an actuarial assistant on the traditional life valuation team. This role ensures that the business is sustainable. They do this by making sure that Protective can honor its obligations to policyholders for decades to come.

Some of the things that stood out to Feurriegel during the internship were:

  • He really liked his coworkers.
  • The company culture was everything he was looking for.
  • The work itself was challenging and interesting, applying math + computer science skills he’d developed in college on real-world projects.
  • The entire internship group got to spend an hour with Rich Bielen, Protective’s CEO, and ask him questions.
  • He thought Birmingham’s rolling hills were beautiful after the plains of Auburn.

To anyone who is considering getting into the field of actuarial, he recommends applying for the internship.

“Don’t let the fact that it’s insurance make you think it’s boring. Once you get into the math behind it, it becomes very interesting.”

Ford Balogh, Fixed Income Trader

Investments, Protective, Summer InternshipFord Balogh, former Protective intern. (Ford Balogh)

Ford Balogh started as an intern at Protective in May 2023. He worked for the company throughout his senior year at Samford, where he studied economics and finance.

Because there aren’t many asset management opportunities in Birmingham, he was looking at options in other cities. One day, he stumbled upon a posting for an internship at Protective in the investments group.

Several things stood out to Balogh during his internship:

  • The position provided great job training + tangible skills.
  • His voice was just as important to any discussion as everyone else’s + he felt like he was set up to succeed.
  • He was always working with the team (vs. for the team), producing deliverables and being given the experience needed to transition into a full-time position.
  • His boss was a good teacher + shared a lot of knowledge during the internship.
  • The team poured into him, allowing him to step into a money management role, which is what he always wanted.
  • He was given hour-long face-to-face meetings with managers across the company so he could learn about Protective as a whole.

“The internship helped me build a lot of confidence. I knew I was valued, even if my opinion was different than others’, and I was always encouraged to speak. That leads to a really good working environment.”

Ford Balogh, Fixed Income Trader, Protective

He reflected that lots of people approach an internship as a necessary stepping stone to a job after graduation.

“At the end of the day, finding a place that will give you job training is so much more important than getting a job. You want to thrive and succeed after your internship, and Protective sets their interns up to succeed.”
