Auburn football made another staff change official Friday morning, hiring Chad Lunsford to be its new special teams coordinator. Lunsford spent five seasons at Auburn from 2009-13 as director of player personnel and director of scouting.

He’ll replace Tanner Burns, who is reportedly set to become the next special teams coordinator at Texas State after spending two seasons at Auburn.

Lunsford was the special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at Florida Atlantic from 2022-2024 and was the program’s interim head coach for the final two games of the 2024 season.

That wasn’t his only experience as a head coach either, leading the Georgia Southern football program from 2018-2021 and serving as interim head coach for six games in 2017. His overall head coaching record sits at 29-22.

Auburn’s special teams were up and down in 2024, improving in coverage, but only making 12 of 22 field goals. The unit also struggled with penalties on punt and kick returns throughout the season.

“Chad has not only been a successful special team coach but has also been a college head coach and brings a lot to the table,” Auburn coach Hugh Freeze said. “His experience and expertise will bolster our special teams. We are happy to welcome Chad and his family back to Auburn.”
