Birmingham police say Demario was hit by a car on Jefferson Avenue Southwest while riding his bike.“This is a gruesome thing to walk out and see. This affected our church members very deeply,” Mathew said.Barbra Mathews, the senior pastor of Faith Temple, tells me mass was over when members saw him.They tried to help him until first responders arrived.“We realized there wasn’t much we can do, so we tried to comfort him in that respect,” Mathew said.Hamilton says while Demario lived with his maternal grandmother, Hamilton knows she gave him the best summer he could have ever had this year."He got structure from us, and then we hand-delivered him back. The guilt is hard. I should’ve stepped up a little earlier," Hamilton said.Hamilton says hold on to today because tomorrow isn’t promised.“You could have never told me I wouldn’t have tomorrow with a 10-year-old. You couldn’t tell me I’d be burying a grandkid. He deserves to be here. Everybody deserves to be here, but he really deserves to be here,” Hamilton said.Birmingham Police says the driver stayed on the scene, and at this time, no charges have been filed against them.Demario would have turned 11 years old next month. He was a fifth grader at Oxmoor Valley Middle School. Birmingham City Schools said in a statement,“We are deeply saddened by the loss of DeMario Kirkland, a 5th-grade scholar at Oxmoor Valley Elementary School. DeMario was well loved by his peers as well as the faculty and staff at Oxmoor Valley. Our school district is providing counseling support for the Oxmoor Valley family. We ask that you keep Demario’s friends, teachers and family in your thoughts and prayers.”
