Birmingham DJ looking to save Christmas for Fairfield children who lost everything in fire.
Christmas is right around the corner and kids are getting excited about what they hope Santa will bring them. But after a fire ripped through a Fairfield apartment complex, it seemed the holiday might not be so bright for dozens of people who lost everything. The blaze at Serenity Apartments on November 14th burned for 90 minutes, with flames shooting from the roof. When firefighters got it under control, 13 units were destroyed, and dozens of people were left homeless. The images on the news got the attention of V94.9 DJ Chris Coleman. He said, “It was immediate, I said, there's no way. It's like, what, a couple of weeks before Christmas? There's no way, you know, they're trying to get placed, they're all displaced. I said they're trying to get placed. I was thinking about all of that. I said, there's no way they're going to be able to get these kids anything for Christmas, so I’m going to take care of the toys.”He's using his annual fundraiser to help the families. This is the 12th annual Party for Presents, it's a day party on December 14 with all proceeds going to purchase gifts for the children who used to live at the destroyed complex. Coleman said, “In my childhood, I had a Christmas every year that I could remember family and Christmas, and I just can't imagine a child waking up and not having anything under the tree for Christmas.”After losing his own home during the April 27th, 2011, tornado outbreak, Coleman says he knows what it's like to suddenly have nothing and he's hoping, with your help to be able to ease some of that loss for the families impacted by the fire. He added, “I'm just asking everybody to just go to Eventbrite and, you know, look up party for presents and let's go. Let's help these kids have a merry Christmas.”Tickets are $25 at the door, or you can buy online here.
