According to the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, crews battled two major structure fires Monday evening.Crews responded to an unoccupied, two-story church on Ensley Avenue around 5:30 p.m. for reports of heavy smoke and flames.Crews worked for several hours to knock down the flames and will remain on scene overnight to prevent reignition.At around the same time, additional crews were responding to similar reports at an abandoned building on 2nd Avenue South.Crews were forced to break through a gate to gain access to the flames.Both fires are currently under investigation; no injuries were reported at either scene.
