Birmingham house fire fatality being investigated as suspicious

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —

Firefighters and police are on scene of a house fire involving a fatality.

Crews with the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service were called to the 2400 block of 40th Avenue North just after 7 p.m.

That's in north Birmingham near Interstate 65.

Flames could be seen from the interstate.

A spokesperson for the BFRS said one fatality was reported.

There were no other injuries.

The fire has been extinguished.

A Birmingham Police Department (BPD) spokesperson held a media briefing at the scene and said the fire death was being investigated as "suspicious circumstances."

The BPD spokesperson said firefighters discovered the victim inside the house.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
