A 3-year-old boy is at Children’s of Alabama recovering from non-life-threatening injuries after being shot on Sunday morning. The Birmingham Police Department says before 8 a.m. west precinct officers were called to the Forest Hills Village Apartment Complex on Tempest Drive. When officers arrived they went inside an apartment to find a toddler shot in the leg. Police tell WVTM 13 they spoke with family members on the scene who say they were inside the apartment when they heard gunshots outside. Shortly after, the toddler started screaming and they noticed he was hit. The family say the shots came from outside the apartment. The little boy was in a bedroom at the time. Police say there's damage to the bedroom wall.Officer Truman Fitzgerald with the department's public information office says, one of the responding officers saw an adult male running away from the scene, about to hop over a fence when they caught him. Other officers took a second male into custody and found a firearm in the parking lot where they first saw the men.Police took both males in custody after a brief foot chase. Fitzgerald says, "It's heartbreaking and we have to realize just as adults our decisions effect the most innocent in our community. Anytime you have criminal activity that takes place at an apartment complex, as we've seen before in the past often our youngest community members are the ones end up being the target, and they get hit. It's not always who the person was after." At this time, it’s not clear from police if the males are involved in the shooting. Fitzgerald says felony assault detectives will interview the men at BPD headquarters.
