
Central Alabama sees growing interest in sport of soccer
BEFOREHAND. AND WE’RE COMING OFF OF A HUGE WEEK FOR SOCCER FANS IN CENTRAL ALABAMA. THE BIRMINGHAM LEGION JUST HAD ITS LARGEST CROWD EVER AT PROTECTIVE STADIUM, WVTM 13, CHIP SCARBOROUGH IS LIVE IN MOUNTAIN BROOK THIS AFTERNOON WHERE YOUTH SOCCER TOURNAMENT IS TAKING PLACE NOW. CHIP, IT SURE SEEMS LIKE THE INTEREST IN SOCCER HERE IN OUR CITY AND AROUND ALABAMA IS GROWING. OH, IT SURE DOES. GLADYS AND JARVIS, YOU KNOW, THERE’S ACTUALLY A SOCCER TOURNAMENT FOR FIVE YEAR OLDS GOING ON HERE IN MOUNTAIN BROOK. ALL WEEKEND LONG, THEY’VE WRAPPED UP FOR TODAY, BUT THEY’LL BE BACK OUT HERE TOMORROW. JUST ANOTHER SIGN OF THE GROWING INTEREST IN SOCCER IN OUR COMMUNITY IN GENERAL. NOW, TAKE A LOOK AT THIS VIDEO OF THE HUGE CROWD OF SOCCER FANS AT PROTECTIVE STADIUM ON WEDNESDAY EVENING AS THE BIRMINGHAM LEGION PLAYED INTER MIAMI’S MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER TEAM, THE LARGEST IN PERSON ATTENDANCE EVER FOR THE LEGION SOCCER FANS SAY THEY’RE JUST OVERJOYED TO SEE SUCH LOVE FOR THE SPORT. OH YEAH, BIRMINGHAM HAS BEEN LEADING THE STATE IN THE INTEREST IN SOCCER AND A LOT OF CLUBS HERE IN TOWN. AND NOW HAVING THE LEGIONS DOING AS WELL AS THEY HAVE BEEN DOING, IT’S GREAT FOR THE STATE, IT’S GREAT FOR THE SPORT. AND LEGION FANS CAN LOOK FORWARD TO THE TEAM’S NEXT HOME GAME. We are coming off of a huge week for soccer fans in Central Alabama as The Birmingham Legion had its largest crowd ever at Protective Stadium.This weekend, there is a soccer tournament for 5-year-olds taking place at Rathmell Sports Park in Mountain Brook. The tournament is just another sign of the growing interest in soccer. "Birmingham has been leading the state in the interest in soccer and lot of clubs here in town," FC Montgomery Soccer Club's director of coaching, Bruno Resende, says. "And now having the Legion doing as well as they have been, it's great for the state. It's great for the sport!"The Legion's next home game against Indy is set for Saturday, June 17 at 6:30 p.m. at Protective Stadium.
