A man is facing several charges after police say he kidnapped his 11-month-old child.Vestavia Hills police were called to the Grand Highland apartment complex on Overton Road for reports of a possible kidnapping with shots fired at about 6:20 p.m. Sunday evening.When police arrived, they determined that Joel Bennett McCandless, the non-custodial parent of the child, had shot into an apartment before entering, taking the child and then leaving.The child was found a short time later in Birmingham, and McCandless was arrested and charged with the following:First-degree kidnappingFirst-degree burglaryShooting into an occupied building, Certain persons prohibited to process a firearm Reckless endangerment Second-degree criminal mischiefViolation of a protection from abuse order Interference with a domestic violence emergency call Follow us on social: Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTubeMcCandless is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a $21,000 bond.

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. —

A man is facing several charges after police say he kidnapped his 11-month-old child.

Vestavia Hills police were called to the Grand Highland apartment complex on Overton Road for reports of a possible kidnapping with shots fired at about 6:20 p.m. Sunday evening.

When police arrived, they determined that Joel Bennett McCandless, the non-custodial parent of the child, had shot into an apartment before entering, taking the child and then leaving.

The child was found a short time later in Birmingham, and McCandless was arrested and charged with the following:

  • First-degree kidnapping
  • First-degree burglary
  • Shooting into an occupied building,
  • Certain persons prohibited to process a firearm
  • Reckless endangerment
  • Second-degree criminal mischief
  • Violation of a protection from abuse order
  • Interference with a domestic violence emergency call
