City of Hoover 'Climb to Remember' event in honor of 9/11 victims

A day of reflection in Hoover.First responders, service members, and community members honored victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks with a memorial stair climb at Riverchase Galleria Mall on Saturday, Sept. 9. Participants climbed the equivalent of 110 stories and speakers shared their experiences of grief and resilience commemorating the 22-year anniversary.Hoover's Police Chief Nick Derzis was among those speakers. Derzis was with the department in 2001 and said more than a dozen Hoover police officers were called to help after the attacks."When you lose 17 police officers at one time to go and be deployed some in this country, some in other countries, it was a tough fight for even us here We didn't know what they were doing, we were concerned for their safety obviously we're just very proud to say all of them returned home safe and sound," said Derzis.Derzis also said memorials like Climb to Remember are especially important for young people to help them understand the significance of September 11th.Benefits from today's Climb to Remember event will go to Hoover's Public Safety Charity Foundation.
