When Walter “Chip” Flower passed away last September, one of his last wishes was that he and his wife Ella’s Barrelli-Chapman, 1855 Louisiana Creole plantation style home, nestled on five acres in Old Covington and on the banks of the Bogue Falaya, would be sold to someone who would preserve its historic and unique originality.
The late Mr. Flower got his wish.

The 4-bed, 3.5 bath, 6,084-square-foot living area center-hall Creole Cottage home and 4.92-acre property at 510 S. America St. – described as a secluded, hidden Victorian Park in the middle of Old Covington – sold on June 9 for $2.3 million to New Orleans natives who will be returning home after owning a winery in California. The Flowers had owned the home since 2006.

Jennifer Rice (Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, Preferred Realtors), the luxury listing and sales agent on the transaction, said the buyers will preserve the property.

“This is one of my favorite houses I have ever come to know – a beautiful, historically-intact, and perfect example of Louisiana Creole architecture. Mr. Flower’s wish was that no one would buy his home and tear it down, so I am thrilled to bring on buyers who I know will preserve this amazing property for future generations,” said Rice. “He was assiduous in his collecting and preserving of unique artifacts and brought portions of the home to today’s standards while preserving so many of its original features and idiosyncrasies.”

Among the home and property’s amenities: a grand, wrap-around front balcony, two screened-in porches, a stunning slate roof, garden, and an ornate glass conservatory with upholstered seating.

“Walking up its stairs and onto the massive veranda encompassing the length of the house and around its corners, one feels that they are entering a time capsule and returning to a bygone era,” said Rice. “Mr. Flower’s restoration of the property now places it on the banks of the Bogue Falaya River.”
