New continues to meet old at the Tchefuncta Club Estates, a 900-acre gated community established in 1956 in Covington.

A new construction home at 82 Thunderbird Dr. – 4 bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms, 4,440 square feet of living space on a 0.52-acre lot – sold for more than $1.5 million on Aug. 15.

82 Thunderbird Dr. features a large open floor plan with a grand living room and study. The kitchen includes an island with white rhino marble countertops, a 48-inch Thermador Range, custom paneled Thermador appliances, and marble backsplash. Additional features include a custom-built mudroom, butler/bar area, and storage space.

The primary suite overlooks the backyard where there is room for a future pool. Upstairs features a common area, theater/game room, three bedrooms with one private bath and one Jack & Jill. There is an oversized driveway for resident parking, as well as a Golf Cart Bay.

The home is part of Phase 3 (T3 Johnston Property), a 133-home site addition to Tchefuncta Club Estates. The development started in 2019 when the Johnston family entrusted their 240-acre property, surrounded by preserved wetlands and landscapes and oak trees that will be embellished with ponds and park areas. Phase 3 features low-density home sites, meaning fewer houses on more acreage than other surrounding subdivisions.

“This is a standout new construction, high-demand development on the Northshore. The built homes are gorgeous and modern, and they are bringing new life and energy into the Tchefuncta Club Estates. It has been a home run out here,” said Ryan McCavitt, TCE Director of Operations. “The appeal is a hidden gem, gated community with all the amenities you could want on a beautiful tract of land, and you’re within close proximity of the highway and access to everything in St. Tammany Parish.”

Tchefuncta Club Estates is located off Exit 59 toward Madisonville. The estates offer a full service restaurant, 18-hole golf course, tennis, pool, boat launch, police security, guard gate for a sheriff substation, private water system, and fiber internet, among other amenities.
McCavitt said Phase 3 was divided into two phases. Of the first 64-home phase, 59 of the lots and/or homes have been purchased. There are roughly 30 under construction. The second phase (remaining 69 homes) is scheduled for planning in 2024.
Phase 3 consists of the streets, Thunderbird, Calla Court, Bright Leaf, Silverberry, Hibiscus, and Senna, following the 67-year tradition of TCE naming streets after birds, trees, and flowers.

In 1956, Tchefuncta Club Estates was established as a result of professionals originally seeking weekend homes and campsites, according to the TCE website. The professionals pooled their monies and purchased land on the Tchefuncte River known as “Emfred”, belonging to the Suter family from Bogalusa. The original 246 homeowners drew names out of a hat to select their home sites. Volunteer committees began work on different aspects the community, including the country club, golf course, nature trails, marina, and public places.

By 1959, the streets were complete and water, sewer, and the very first underground power lines in the state were in place. Tchefuncta Country Club opened in 1961. Today, each property owner is a stockholder in the community and homeowners participate in the preservation and operation of their neighborhoods.
