  • Take a hike

‘The mist rarely cleared during my hike up Beinn a’ Chochuill in the Scottish Highlands on 26 July. As I approached the top I noticed that the mist had lifted and it became a race to reach the top before it descended once again. The view north to the Isle of Lismore and the Appin peninsula was well worth the effort.’

  • Rail revival

‘This is our newly restored railway station in Malvern, Worcestershire. Malvern was the haunt of Charles Darwin, in search of the “water cure” for his daughter, who sadly died in the town. The Malvern Hills were also the inspiration of much of Edward Elgar’s music. Both these inspired characters will have used this railway station.’

‘These gorgeously rampant borage plants have been sown on the margins of my local playing fields in Chester to improve biodiversity. The furry stems make a lush frame for late summer sunsets.’

  • Bear necessities

‘A polar bear making its way along the coast in Svalbard, Norway. I was on a trip with Naturetrek around Svalbard and had been hoping to see polar bears. We’d had a distant view the day before, but then one of the ship’s crew spotted this young male. We were able to follow him for a while as he weaved his way in and out of the rocks and snow.’
