A Dothan man who shot and killed a woman Friday surrendered to authorities following an hours-long standoff, police said.
Just after 9:30 a.m., 911 dispatchers in Dothan were notified of a possible assault involving a firearm in the 4000 block of Mance Newton Road, said Chief William Benny.
The person who called 911 -- a relative of the suspect, 31-year-old Dustin Joe Rigsbee -- said Rigsbee told them he shot Harleigh Michelle Dills, 31, at their home on Mance Newton Road, the chief said.
Officers were dispatched to the house.
While clearing the home, they found Dills with a single gunshot wound to her upper body.
The investigation revealed Dills was shot with a high-caliber gun.
As officers were responding to the scene, they asked the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office to contact the Rigsbee and the person who called 911, who were at a home in Jack, in an unincorporated area of the county.
When Coffee County deputies arrived at the Jack home, Rigsbee fled out the back of the house, police said.
Crisis negotiators were able to reach Rigsbee on his cell phone to start negotiations for his surrender.
After hours of negotiations, Rigsbee surrendered to Coffee County deputies and an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency SWAT team.
After being taken to Dothan police headquarters for an interview, Rigsbee was charged with one count of murder.
He is being held in the Dale County jail without bond, jail records showed.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dills’ family and friends during this difficult and tragic time,” the chief said in a statement.
