A driver was killed after their vehicle collided with an Amtrak train Wednesday night in Mobile, officials said.

Crews with the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department were dispatched to Navco Road at Dog River Road around 6:33 p.m. Wednesday on a report of a vehicle struck by a train at a railroad crossing, said Steven Millhouse with the department.

Firefighters found a vehicle adjacent to the train tracks with “significant crash damage,” Millhouse said, while heavy flames were observed in the front of the train.

The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Amtrak train, which consisted of two locomotives and two passenger cars, was able to stop about a half-mile east of the railroad crossing.

Firefighters accessed the train via Dog River Road residential properties adjacent to the tracks.

Six Amtrak personnel were able to evacuate the train without injuries, Millhouse said.

Firefighters extinguished flames before fire within the train spread.

Mobile police are investigating the incident.
