A large plume of black smoke could be seen for miles from a fire that destroyed a vacant business Tuesday morning in Birmingham.The fire was reported just before 9:30 a.m. at a former upholstery shop on Third Avenue North and Second Court, according to Birmingham Fire and Rescue.When firefighters arrived they saw flames and heavy smoke pouring from the building.The building had been empty for a couple of years but still had items stored inside, according to a fire department official.
