Football field to wrestling mat: A triumphant return at the Alabama State Games
Armond Lloyd made a winning return to the world of competitive sports in June, earning a gold medal in the 285-pound division of wrestling at the Alabama State Games.Armond, a WVTM 13 sales executive, made the transition from the Samford football field to the wrestling mat after a career-ending injury, but his passion for sports never wavered.“As a former collegiate and professional athlete, I've never lost the spark of competition. I thrive in uncomfortable situations because that's where growth happens. So, when the State Games came around, signing up felt like a no-brainer,” Lloyd said.The Alabama State Games is an annual Olympic-style event held at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex featuring sports from powerlifting to swimming. Athletes from across the state came out to participate in the heavy weight wrestling competition.Lloyd stood out using strength, strategy, and determination to earn the top spot on the podium. He hopes to show others that it’s never too late to set a new goal, and even after one dream ends another can begin.He is starting to train and prepare for the State Games of America that will be held in Pennsylvania in July of 2026.
