More rainy weather through Tuesday before a few drier days

FIRST, THIS IS WVTM. 13 WEATHER WVTM 13 LIVE DOPPLER STILL TRACKING SOME SCATTERED SHOWERS ACROSS BLUNT. SAINT CLAIR ETOWAH AND CALHOUN COUNTIES. AND THESE ARE DOWNPOURS THAT ARE HEAVY ENOUGH TO AT LEAST HERE ON THE ROOFTOP AND NEED THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS. BUT YOU CAN SEE THERE’S SOMEWHAT SPORADIC AND THE RAIN MAY LOOK A LOT LIKE THAT DURING THE DAY TOMORROW BECAUSE AS WE HAVE THIS BIG UPPER AIR DISTURBANCE CLOSE BY, PLUS AN EASTERLY FLOW DRAGGING IN SOME ATLANTIC MOISTURE ACROSS GEORGIA. AND THEN ONCE THIS GETS ACROSS THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF NORTHEAST ALABAMA, WE’LL LIKELY SEE QUITE A BIT OF RAIN DEVELOPING ON THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE STATE THROUGH TONIGHT AND EARLY TOMORROW MORNING. HERE’S A SNAPSHOT AT 6 A.M. NOW, WE DON’T HAVE A LOT OF INSTABILITY AROUND FOR THUNDERSTORMS, BUT SOME OF THESE COULD HAVE A LITTLE LIGHTNING WITH THEM NOW AND THEN, ESPECIALLY DOWN TOWARD CHILTON AND SHELBY AND COOSA COUNTIES AROUND. 6 A.M. TO 8 A.M. THAT’S WHERE SOME OF THE ACTION GETS A LITTLE BIT HEAVIER AND KEEPS ON ROLLING ON THROUGH TOMORROW AFTERNOON. SOME WIDELY SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS HERE AND THERE. AND THEN AS WE GET INTO TOMORROW NIGHT, THINGS ARE GOING TO START TO DRY OUT A LITTLE BIT FOR US. SO SOME SCATTERED SHOWERS OVER THE NEXT 12 TO 24 HOURS OR SO. IT’S NOT GOING TO RAIN THE ENTIRE TIME. AND I CERTAINLY DON’T THINK IT RAINS EVERYWHERE EQUALLY ON TUESDAY. BUT THERE’S A GOOD CHANCE THAT YOU’LL RUN INTO SOME WET WEATHER NOW AND THEN, ESPECIALLY FOR THE FIRST PART OF THE DAY. THEN WE’LL GET TO ABOUT 73 DEGREES TOMORROW AFTERNOON AND THINGS START TO DRY OUT AGAIN TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THE DAY ON WEDNESDAY, I GOT THE SEC TOURNAMENT OUT AT THE HOOVER METS STADIUM. COMING UP TOMORROW, SOUTH CAROLINA AND GEORGIA. 9:30 A.M. PRETTY GOOD CHANCE OF SOME WET WEATHER FOR THAT ONE. IN FACT, THERE’S A CHANCE THAT SOME OF THESE GAMES MAY HAVE TO SLIDE IN TIME. I DON’T THINK WE END UP WITH A RAIN OUT TOMORROW, BUT THERE VERY WELL COULD BE SOME SHOWERS THAT INTERFERE WITH PLAY NOW. AND THEN 1:00, ROUGHLY THE TIME I WOULD EXPECT TENNESSEE AND A&M TO PLAY 72 AND IN THE 70S, MAYBE EVEN BRIEFLY INTO THE UPPER 70S AROUND HOOVER BY 7:00 TOMORROW EVENING, BY THE TIME THAT AUBURN AND MISSOURI WOULD ROUGHLY BE GETTING CLOSE TO GETTING UNDERWAY. SO TOMORROW OUR BEST CHANCE OF SHOWERS WOULD BE MAINLY EAST OF INTERSTATE 65. SHELBY COUNTY, SAINT CLAIR COUNTY, TALLADEGA COUNTY. CALHOUN ETOWAH, CLAY COUNTY. EASTWARD, ISOLATED SPOTS COULD GET 1 TO 2IN OF RAIN. THE MAJORITY OF US NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THAT. SO HERE’S OUR DRIER WEATHER WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. AND THEN ON FRIDAY, ANOTHER DISTURBANCE STARTS TO MOVE IN. SO WHAT’S A DISTURBANCE? WELL, IT’S JUST A POCKET OF COOL AIR ALOFT THAT TENDS TO HELP TO STIR THE ATMOSPHERE UP. AND WHEN THAT HAPPENS, WE GET OCCASIONAL SHOWERS, A FEW SHOWERS NOW AND THEN FROM FRIDAY THROUGH THE MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND, I DON’T THINK IT RAINS THE ENTIRE TIME HERE. IT CERTAINLY DOESN’T RAIN EQUALLY EVERYWHERE, BUT WE WILL BE GETTING WARMER IN THE AFTERNOONS OVERNIGHT, LOW TEMPERATURES ARE IN THE 50S AND 60S AND WE’LL EVEN STICK WITH AT LEAST A SMALL CHANCE OF A STRAY SHOWER OR STOR

More rainy weather through Tuesday before a few drier days

Occasional showers pass through North and Central Alabama overtonight and Tuesday, and then we see some drier weather setting in for a few days leading up to the Memorial Day Weekend. Check the video forecast for the latest.WHERE’S THE RAIN? A forecast for ‘scattered’ showers means some of us get rain while others do not, and that is exactly what happened on Monday. Expect an expansion of showers through Tuesday morning. Much of the rain remains light, but a few scattered areas of heavier downpours could provide up to a half-inch of rain through midday Tuesday. Tuesday’s outlook: not the prettiest day of the week for sure. Expect a mostly cloudy sky, a light east breeze, and occasional showers especially in the first half of the day. Clouds and rain combine with that east breeze to keep it cool, too. Temperatures only climb into the upper 60s to lower 70s in the afternoon. Best chance of rain? The most persistent rain (heaviest, too) falls over eastern Alabama through early Tuesday afternoon. Calhoun, Cherokee, Clay, Cleburne, Etowah, and Randolph Counties get the more substantial rain (up to 1.5” in spots) while communities farther west see lesser, more uneven totals ranging from nothing to as much as 0.75” through Tuesday afternoon. DRIER DAYS AHEADMay’s rainfall has been very unevenly distributed across the state. Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International only has 0.77” on the month: a deficit of 2.57” from ‘average.’ Ashland in Clay County has nearly 10 times that with 7.16” of rain, and Talladega has 6.95” in May so far.The chance of daily rain goes to nearly zero for Wednesday and Thursday around Alabama; drier air brings more comfortable mornings and warmer afternoons as well.On Friday, another disturbance coming in from the north could trigger a few scattered showers and storms over the northern half of Alabama. The over-all impact of that round is difficult to see at this distance. It does not look like an all-out soaker, but occasionally these little disturbances can kick off some hefty downpours. We’ll be refining Friday’s forecast through the week.MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND OUTLOOKMemorial Day Weekend weather looks like more of the same for Alabama: a chance of some hit-or-miss showers and thunderstorms. How hot will it get? Look for typical temperatures for late May: nothing extreme, highs in the lower to middle 80s with enough humidity to spark a storm or two each afternoon. If you have outdoor activities planned for the weekend, keep in mind that there is no real skill in predicting a single thunderstorm to a single spot. We see the environment where storms develop much better than we can see the ‘storm’ itself ahead of time.
