BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —

Birmingham City School Board of Education members will have the final say during a work session on Tuesday to discuss and vote on putting an on-site grocery store in Huffman Middle School.

The vote will approve the memorandum of agreement contract between the school district and City of Birmingham leaders.

Councilor Clinton Woods’ visit to an Atlanta middle school in 2021 and seeing how a school grocery store in that school sparked the idea to bring it back to Birmingham, more specifically at Huffman Middle School.

"Putting that grocery store in that school gives one, students the opportunity to meet some of the needs that they have. The store is stocked with everything from fresh fruits and vegetables, might be Oreos, cereal, frozen food, meats and things they can take home to cook,” Wood said.

Woods says the pilot project will address some food insecurity in the community.

“I think we've all heard stories and concerns from the community around if students are getting three meals a day, is there any gaps in that? We've talked about food deserts, and a lot of our city does exist in food deserts. We had the opportunity to be creative and implement a distribution method for food to get home,” Woods said.

Woods adds a group called 'Goodr' will work with a local grocery store in Birmingham to supply the school grocery store so students or parents can buy fresh food and produce.

“They simply use a digital platform to schedule a date. That could be the parent, that could be a student. [It] really just gives them the ability to access that store. the store is restocked on a regular basis,” Woods said.

The pilot program will be funded through Wood’s American Rescue Plan Act fund.

A total of $277,500 will fund the pilot program at Huffman Middle and it’s expected to last for two school years.
