BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —

A holiday tradition continued to light up downtown Birmingham.

Colorful lights once again adorned Regions Bank's 30-story headquarters building Friday night, showing off designs of Christmas trees, a giant wreath, and a huge stocking.

The "curtain wall" as it's called, is made when workers install colored "gel sleeves" over the existing window lighting.

“There’s a lot of work that goes into this and a lot of testing to make sure all the right lights and all the right colors are in place,” said Deno Posey, executive vice president of Enterprise Operations. “Teams comb through the building with grids showing which colors are needed in which windows. Then, they place ‘gel sleeves’ on the lights above each window that’s part of the designs. Their work pays off in a beautiful display.”

A few other designs have been installed, including an illuminated "USA" and American flag during the Persian Gulf War in 1991, an illuminated Olympic torch and rings in 1996, and a golfer for the annual Regions Tradition golf tournament.

The bright tradition has been seen since the 1970s.
