When Alabama softball opened its season Friday in Phoenix, Ariz. against Washington, one of the Huskies it faced had a deep connection to the Crimson Tide. Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer’s daughter, Alexis DeBoer, was playing her first college softball game, for the school her father left to take the UA job in January 2024.

The younger DeBoer batted third for the Huskies, in their first game of the Candrea Classic. Alabama pulled off the win, opening the year with a 5-1 victory.

In the week ahead of the game, head coach Patrick Murphy said he expected Kalen DeBoer and his wife Nicole to be in attendance.

“First game,” Murphy said Tuesday. “They’re coming, mom and dad.”

The right-handed freshman got a hit in the loss, finishing 1-for-3 from the plate. Hits were difficult to come by for the Huskies, with Alabama pitcher Jocelyn Briski only giving up four of them.

The hit came to lead off the sixth inning. DeBoer singled down the left field line, before Tia Durst came in to pinch run.

Briski gave up a home run in the top of the first to Washington’s Jadyn Glab, and no more runs the rest of the way. She went the distance in the win.

Offensively, Audrey Vandagriff tied the score in the bottom of the second with an RBI double. Alexis Pupillo homered in the third to deliver the winning run, and the Crimson Tide poured it on from there to begin the season 1-0.

That record improved in Alabama’s second game of the day, against Michigan State. Catelyn Riley earned the win in the circle for the Crimson Tide in that game, going six innings and allowing six hits and one run in the 6-2 victory.

Catcher Marlie Giles opened the scoring for UA in that game, with a home run to left field. After the Spartans tied the score, the Crimson Tide broke it open in the fourth and fifth, with two runs in each inning to seal the win.

Alabama and Washington will face off again Saturday. The game is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. CT in Phoenix.
