BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- Federal and state tax returns are due by midnight Tuesday. Even if you have to file an extension, a tax expert said you need to make a payment if you owe the government money.
Busy moms who are filing right before the deadline spoke Monday. Krystel Hurd, a mother of three, said she may end up filing an extension in 2025.
“I’ve been very busy,” Hurd said. “I work full time, three kids. I also own a business. The time just kind of crept up on me. I wasn’t ready."
“If you’re waiting on documents to come in, you would want to file that extension,” said Zach Jordan a certified public accountant with Vic Smith, CPA, P.C. in Alabaster. "If you owe money, that money is still due April the 15th."
Jordan said the penalty could be up to 25% of the tax owed. Despite reported cuts by the Department of Government Efficiency, Jordan said your taxes are still due by Tuesday.
The Associated Press reported that taxpayers calling the IRS for help processing their taxes in 2025 may find it harder than normal to get someone on the phone, a situation that is only expected to get worse next year with anticipated staffing cuts.
Carl Bates, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Central and South Alabama, warned that people need to make sure they go with a tax preparer who is licensed with an IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number.
“We’ve seen people who will do your taxes, take your money for filing your taxes and then never file your taxes for you," Bates said. "That’s a scam, and you need to be careful."
