Hurricane Oscar strengthens in the Greater Antilles
I'm meteorologist Jordan West with *** quick tropics update. It looks like tropical storm Nadine has now made landfall off the coast of Belize and it's pushing inland as we speak. That said it's starting to weaken. The last advisory issued by the National Hurricane Center had winds at about 50 MPH. It was moving west at eight MPH. It will continue that track, it'll dissipate soon and it looks like there are still some tropical storm warnings and effect for parts of the eastern Yucatan Peninsula and the eastern coast of Belize as well. We also have hurricane Oscar. This was the last advisory issued by the National Hurricane Center at 1 p.m. winds. Now at 80 MPH, the hurricane hunters flew into this hurricane and diagnosed that category one status but it could be making landfall somewhere near the Turks and Caicos Islands within the next few hours. We'll continue to monitor that. But where is the system headed? Well, it'll continue in *** big category one hurricane as it moves west at about 12 MPH, it's gonna approach Cuba weaken and then make *** U turn out of the greater Antilles as *** tropical storm before making its way out into the Atlantic Ocean. The reason this system is not going to be impacting the United States is because we have our area of high pressure, we have ring, we have about over us. That's kept everything dry here for the majority of the eastern United States for the past few days and the days to come as well. And that same system is keeping everything in terms of tropical activity away from the United States. But we'll keep you guys updated on any more tropical activity that happens for now. Those are the only two named systems. Now, we're looking at tropical climatology, kind of gives you an idea of what typically happens in *** given year. We typically see very little development of tropical activity and the first months of the season, we peak in the middle of September and then we see *** steep drop as we move into the end of October where we are now and we see very little activity as we move into next month in the month of November before the season ends. So that's some good news. This is what we've seen so far this season, an array of named tropical systems. We've seen more hurricanes than trop storms this season so far. Um And we'll, we will continue to watch for any more tropical development, just kind of recap what all we have seen. Alberto Alberto made landfall in Mexico at the very beginning of the season. As *** tropical storm, then we had barrel strengthened to *** record breaking category five hurricane before weakening and making landfall in Texas and creating *** multiple day tornado outbreak across parts of the United States. And then we had Chris develop in the Gulf of Mexico. Briefly. Debbie was *** category one hurricane that made landfall in Florida. Ernesto was *** fish storm. It did impact some parts of um, the Antilles as well. Then we had Francine making landfall in Louisiana. Gordon was *** fish storm. Helene was *** catastrophic storm that impacted parts of the United States. So the category four hurricane upon landfall, Isaac Joyce, Kirk and Leslie, all fish storms Milton was another strong storm that weakened after making LA before making landfall. Um And after making landfall too, um in Florida recently, Nadine just formed into *** tropical storm is weakening as we speak. And Oscar is currently *** category one hurricane that will get stronger than that. If we see any more activity within the next month, we'll let you know if these systems form into something stronger like *** tropical storm or hurricane. The next names on the list are Patty Raphael and Sarah. You can stay up to date on all things tropics at WVTM thirteen.com. I'm meteorologist Jordan West
