Marice, or "Marcie," Parkes from Capitola, California, celebrated her 101st birthday doing her favorite hobby: playing bridge with her lifelong friends."I feel great! I'm still driving. I drove over here on my own. I live by myself. My daughter lives 3 miles from me. She helps me when I need help, but I'm in very good health," said Parkes. Born in 1922, Parkes lived through a time when women couldn't vote, the Great Depression, and World War II."Her body of knowledge is just incredible. She's kind of a walking encyclopedia of the last 100 years," said Claudia Schlachter, Parkes' daughter. Eating healthy, cultivating great friends, and having a little fun are Parkes' top tips for a long life."I eat my fruits and veggies and a little wine sometimes in the evening; it always tastes good. I think what you eat has a lot to do with your health," said Parkes. "You know, I think it's her positivity living that long. You can be angry about life or carry grudges — she doesn't," said Schlachter. Marcie was a stenographer; her job was writing shorthand and typed letters. She also traveled the world with her husband, who served in the Air Force for 30 years. She's lived in places like Japan and Alaska — before it was even a state — but says Capitola is her favorite by far."This Santa Cruz community is the most beautiful, colorful, and exciting place that I've ever lived, and I was so happy to find out that I was going to spend the rest of my life in this community," said Parkes. Her crown is almost as bright as her smile, her sense of humor transcending time."I think I'm going to live at least another year — let's hope so," said Parkes.
