IMPACT DAY: Low threat of a few strong storms Saturday

FOR TODAY. AND OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS THIS IS WHAT WE LOOK LIKE RIGHT NOW FROM OUR WVTM 13 STUDIO CAMERA LOOKING OVER DOWNTOWN BIRMINGHAM. YOU CAN SEE THE GRAY SKY THERE FROM TIME TO TIME. WE’VE SEEN THESE ROUNDS OF MIST AND DRIZZLE MOVING THROUGH. ONE OF THOSE IS ACTUALLY APPROACHING DOWNTOWN NOW, SO THIS VIEW WILL BE CHANGING HERE IN THE NEXT FEW MINUTES. LOOK AT OUR TEMPERATURE. WE’RE AT 48 DEGREES. TEMPERATURES ARE EITHER HOLDING STEADY FROM THIS MORNING OR EVEN DROPPING A DEGREE OR TWO AS SOME OF THAT LIGHT RAIN MOVES THROUGH THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. ONCE WE SEE THESE SHOWERS LIFTING AWAY, WE WILL WARM INTO THE LOWER AND MIDDLE 50S IN SOME LOCATIONS. SO THIS IS THE VIEW FROM OUR WVTM 13 LIVE DOPPLER RADAR OVER THE LAST HOUR. YOU CAN SEE THIS BAND OF RAIN HERE STRETCHING FROM COOSA COUNTY THROUGH SHELBY INTO JEFFERSON WALKER, WINSTON COUNTY. WE’LL TAKE YOU DOWN AND SHOW YOU SOME OF THE SPOTS WHERE WE HAVE THAT FINE MIST MOVING THROUGH RIGHT NOW. SO GOODWATER TO SYLACAUGA STRETCHING TOWARDS COLUMBIANA OVER I-65 NEAR ALABASTER, AND THEN UP TOWARDS 459 AND I-20 NEAR BESSEMER. WE’VE GOT SOME LIGHT RAIN AS WELL. PRETTY GOOD COVERAGE OF THESE SHOWERS RIGHT ALONG I-20 TWO IN WALKER COUNTY NEAR JASPER AND THEN STRETCHING TOWARDS DOUBLE SPRINGS. AND WINSTON DID WANT TO SHOW YOU WHERE OUR TEMPERATURES ARE. SO WE RANGE ANYWHERE FROM THE UPPER 40S TO THE MID 50S. WARM SPOTS IS EUTAW 55 DEGREES BIRMINGHAM STILL HOLDING AT 48 HALEYVILLE AT 46. THANKS TO SOME OF THAT RAIN AROUND, WE ARE BRINGING UP RAIN COVERAGE FOR TOMORROW, SO MORE FOLKS ARE GOING TO SEE SHOWERS, ESPECIALLY DURING THE SECOND HALF OF THE DAY TOMORROW. OTHERWISE, A MAINLY CLOUDY SKY WITH MILD TEMPERATURES. AND THEN YOU SEE THIS ICON HERE SATURDAY. THAT IS AN IMPACT DAY FOR THE RISK OF A FEW STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS, MAINLY DURING THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING. YELLOW COLOR YOU SEE HERE TO THE WEST. THAT’S A SLIGHT LEVEL TWO OUT OF FIVE RISK MUCH OF ALABAMA IN A MARGINAL LEVEL ONE OUT OF FIVE. SO OVERALL THREAT LOW. BUT IF A FEW STORMS COULD BECOME STRONG, THE MAIN THREATS ARE GOING TO BE DAMAGING WINDS, HEAVY RAIN, A POSSIBILITY OF SOME HAIL. AND WE CAN’T COMPLETELY RULE OUT THE RISK OF A TORNADO WARNING OR TWO. SO A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE A WAY TO GET WARNINGS ON SATURDAY JUST IN CASE THEY’RE NEEDED. OVERALL, SEVERE RISK ON THE LOW SIDE, BUT IT’S NOT ZERO. LET’S TIME IT OUT. THIS IS 6 A.M. SATURDAY, STARTING THE DAY WITH A FEW SPOTTY SHOWERS AROUND AS WE MOVE TOWARDS 9 A.M. WE SEE A FEW MORE SHOWERS AND STORMS DEVELOPING, AND THEN BY THE AFTERNOON WE’LL BE WATCHING FOR THE POTENTIAL OF A LINE TO DEVELOP. MOVING INTO THE STATE BY THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS. AND IT’S RIGHT ALONG THIS LINE THAT WE COULD SEE THAT POSSIBILITY OF SOME STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS. THIS IS A VERY CONDITIONAL THREAT, THOUGH. IF WE GET A LOT OF RAIN IN THE MORNING, THAT COULD HELP TO STABILIZE THE ATMOSPHERE, BRINGING DOWN OUR AFTERNOON AND EVENING RISK OF STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS. ANOTHER THING THAT COULD HELP US OUT IF WE SEE A LOT OF DEVELOPMENT OF STORMS ALONG THE GULF COAST, THAT COULD ALSO BRING DOWN OUR SEVERE RISK. SO REALLY A LOT TO KEEP FINE TUNING IN THE COMING DAYS. MAKE SURE YOU’RE CHECKING BACK. BUT BASED ON THIS MODELING HERE, 6:00 WE’VE GOT A HEAVY BAND OF RAIN AND SOME THUNDER MOVING THROUGH DOWNTOWN BIRMINGHAM. SATURDAY EVENING, AND WE WILL KEEP SOME RAIN AND STORMS AROUND LATE SATURDAY. GOOD NEWS, THOUGH, IS THAT WE WILL HAVE IMPROVING WEATHER CONDITIONS THROUGH THE DAY. ON SUNDAY, WE WILL ACTUALLY END UP SEEING A LOT OF SUNSHINE THROUGH THE DAY SUNDAY AS SOME DRIER AIR MOVES INTO THE STATE. WE ARE ALSO LOOKING MAINLY DRY AND A LITTLE BIT COOLER, CLOSE TO WHERE WE WOULD EXPECT TO BE THIS TIME OF THE
