Jeep club helps first responders during winter storms
LOOK AT FIRST ALERT FUTURESCAN COMING UP IN JUST A LITTLE BIT. A LOCAL JEEP CLUB IS GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND TO SHOW APPRECIATION FOR OUR FIRST RESPONDERS. AND WITH SNOW COMING THIS WEEKEND, THE CLUB IS OFFERING FREE RIDES TO HELP POLICE, FIREFIGHTERS AND HEALTH CARE WORKERS GET TO WORK SAFELY. KMBC NINE TERISA WHITE SPOKE WITH ONE OF THE CLUB’S MEMBERS ABOUT THIS PLAN. TERISA. THAT’S RIGHT. WELL, THIS ISN’T MY JEEP, BUT I MIGHT WANT TO LOOK INTO GETTING A JEEP BECAUSE I DIDN’T REALIZE THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY THAT COMES WITH HAVING A JEEP. I MEAN, FROM THESE LITTLE DUCKIES RIGHT HERE, BUT ALSO THIS ACT OF KINDNESS. MIKE MALONE HAS BEEN DRIVING JEEPS FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS. SO WE GO GET THEM FROM THEIR HOUSE FIRST THING IN THE MORNING AND TAKE THEM WHERE THEY NEED TO BE. HIS JEEP CLUB, MIDWEST CRAWLERS, HAS BEEN COMMUNITY FOR HIM IN THE PAST FEW YEARS. THEY’VE IMPLEMENTED AN INITIATIVE SPECIFICALLY FOR FIRST RESPONDERS, SNOW SQUAD IS DESIGNED IS SET FOR FIRST RESPONDERS AND HOSPITAL EMPLOYEES. SO, YOU KNOW, THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE TO GET TO WORK IN BAD WEATHER. WE LIKE TO MAKE SURE THEY CAN GET THERE. WITH THE FIRST SNOW OF THE SEASON THIS WEEKEND, THEY’RE PUTTING 20 JEEPS ON THE GROUND. UNTIL ROAD CONDITIONS EASE UP. WE’RE A TEAM. WE’LL BAND TOGETHER AND DO WHAT WE NEED TO DO TO, YOU KNOW, TO TRY TO HELP ALL THESE PEOPLE. HE SAYS IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT DAY, TIME OR LOCATION THESE THINGS ARE BUILT FOR, THE KIND OF WEATHER WE’RE GETTING. THEY HAVE PATIENTS THAT THEY REALLY NEED TO SEE, AND THOSE PATIENTS NEED THEIR CARE. SO THEY’RE VERY APPRECIATIVE THAT WE GET THEM WHERE THEY NEED TO GO. WELL, MIKE SAID THAT THEY’RE HELPING ALL FIRST RESPONDERS ALL OVER THE METRO, AND THEY’RE GOING TO TRY TO REACH EVERYONE, BUT THEY NEED AT LEAST A 24 HOUR NOTICE IN ADVANCE. The Midwest Krawlers club mobilized 20 Jeeps to assist first responders and hospital employees during the season's first snowstorm."We go get them from their house first thing in the morning and take them where they need to be," said Mike Malone, who has been driving Jeeps for the past 20 years.His Jeep club, the Midwest Krawlers, has become a community for him."Snow Squad is designed -- is set for first responders and hospital employees, so, you know, the people that have to get to work in bad weather, we like to make sure they can get there," he said.With the first snow of the season, the club has deployed 20 Jeeps this weekend until road conditions improve."We're a team; we'll band together and do what we need to do to, you know, to try to help all these people," Malone said.He emphasized that it doesn't matter the day, time or location — they are always ready to help.
