Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office grapples with proliferation of glock switches and state gun laws

COMBATING GLOCK SWITCHES ACROSS JEFFERSON COUNTY. WE HAVE TEAM COVERAGE AS WE LOOK INTO SAFETY CONCERNS. WVTM 13, MAGDALA LOUISSAINT SAT DOWN WITH DISTRICT ATTORNEY DANNY KARR, MAGDALA. WHAT IS HE SAYING ABOUT A STATEWIDE BAN ON GLOCK SWITCHES? SO BRITTANY AND GUY DANNY KARR’S OFFICE SEES PLENTY OF CASES, GUN CASES, ESPECIALLY WHERE SOMETIMES THEY’RE HANDED OVER TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, ESPECIALLY IF A GLOCK SWITCH IS INVOLVED. NOW, THERE’S NOT A CURRENT STATE LAW THAT REGULATES IT. I SPOKE CANDIDLY WITH DANNY KARR ABOUT THAT. THE POSSIBLE SCENARIO DURING A TRAFFIC STOP AND IF A LOCAL OFFICER SEES A FIREARM WITH A GLOCK SWITCH. IF THE GLOCK SWITCH IS ATTACHED, IT’S ON THE GUN. IT WON’T COME TO YOUR OFFICE. NO. IF IT’S NOT ATTACHED TO THE GUN, WILL IT COME TO YOUR OFFICE? WELL, WE HAVE PERMITLESS CARRY. SO THE QUESTION THEN IS IF THAT’S THE ONLY REASON THEY’RE STOPPING THEM, THEY CAN’T CHARGE THEM. THERE’S NO REQUIREMENT TO HAVE A PERMIT. DISTRICT ATTORNEY DANNY KARR IS ALL IN FAVOR OF HAVING GLOCK SWITCHES OUTLAWED IN ALABAMA. RIGHT NOW, IT’S JUST A DANGEROUS SITUATION, IN MY OPINION, FOR EVERYONE. ONE CASE THAT HAS YET TO MAKE IT TO THE DA’S OFFICE IS JAYLIN PATTON. LAST MONTH, A BPD OFFICER PULLED HIM OVER ON I-59 20 DURING THE TRAFFIC STOP. POLICE SAY THE 28 YEAR OLD RAN AWAY WITH A GUN. TOOK THE GUN. HE FACES MULTIPLE STATE CHARGES FOR THAT. BUT SIX DAYS AGO, THE U.S. DISTRICT ATTORNEY SLAMMED PATTON WITH FEDERAL CHARGES FOR HAVING A GLOCK SWITCH ON THE SAME GUN FROM THIS INCIDENT. WE HAVE TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO DEAL WITH THE MINDSET OF THESE INDIVIDUALS. BUT AT THE SAME TIME, MAKE THEM UNDERSTAND THAT THERE ARE REAL RAMIFICATIONS FOR HAVING THESE TYPE OF WEAPONS IN OUR COMMUNITY. THAT IS THE MESSAGE THAT HAS TO BE SENT OUT. JUST LAST WEEK, THE WHITE HOUSE ANNOUNCED AN EXECUTIVE ORDER ESTABLISHING AN EMERGING FIREARMS THREATS TASK FORCE THAT WILL START LOOKING INTO MACHINE GUN CONVERSION DEVICES TO CREATE THIS TASK FORCE THAT HAS TO HAVE A REPORT WITHIN 90 DAYS ABOUT 3D PRINTING, FIREARMS AND AND OTHER THINGS. A LOT CAN HAPPEN IN 90 DAYS. WE’VE ALREADY SEEN WHAT HAPPENED A WEEK AGO. CORRECT. DOES THAT REALLY HELP? BIRMINGHAM? YOU KNOW, I CAN’T SAY IT DOES. I CAN’T SAY IT DOESN’T. WHAT I CAN SAY IS THAT IT’S BRINGING MORE AWARENESS. BUT THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS, WE HAVE TO FIGURE OUT HERE LOCALLY HOW TO DEAL WITH THIS ISSUE AND EVEN BIGGER ISSUES STILL AT HAND IS SOLVING THE FIVE POINTS SOUTH MASS SHOOTING. 17 PEOPLE WERE SHOT AND FOUR WERE KILLED. LAW ENFORCEMENT BELIEVES GLOCK SWITCHES WERE USED. CARR SAYS GUN PERMITS MUST COME BACK. YOU DON’T HAVE A PERMIT REQUIREMENT ANYMORE AND YOU PLACE THE OFFICERS IN DANGER, IN MY OPINION, BECAUSE IN THAT INSTANCE THAT WE JUST TALKED ABOUT, A PERSON CAN JUST DRIVE OFF AND WHAT IF THEY’RE ON THEIR WAY TO DO HARM TO A SIGNIFICANT OTHER? THERE WAS A BILL INTRODUCED IN THE LAST LEGISLATIVE SESSION TO MAKE GLOCK SWITCHES ILLEGAL IN ALABAMA, BUT IT NEVER MADE IT TO THE HOUSE OUT OF THE HOUSE, THAT IS. AND AFTER THE RECENT MASS SHOOTING, CARR HOPES THERE WILL BE BIGGER BIPARTISAN EFFORT TO PASS IT. THIS TIME. HE ALSO SAYS SHOULD THE GUNMAN IN THIS CASE GET CAUGHT, HIS OFFICE WILL HANDLE THE HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION AND THE FED
