RETRO FIND: Jimmy Carter gives life advice at college graduation

Six years after leaving the presidency, Jimmy Carter gave apt advice to a group of recent graduates.

It's been more than *** special day for the 180 graduates of Center College's 164th commencement exercises. Not only will these young men and women be entering the real world, they have the guidance of *** former United States president to start them on their way. Here's *** time though for you to realize. That as *** young college graduate, You are among the most fortunate people on earth. The only limit we really have to constrain us is *** voluntary self-imposed limit. Limits that we put on ourselves. Because we underestimate. In the very personal 18 minute speech, the former president stressed to these students that they are the world. He charged them to practice morality first, creativity, flexibility, and persistence. He stressed that they not be arrogant because they are Americans, but to strive for peace because without it there is no world. With that, the former students and new alumni filed along to receive their sheepskins. I thought it was for personal, so usually they talk about the whole class as *** whole, and I thought it was personal as far as my own goals and getting out there and conquering everything I possibly could myself. You don't think about it until you see somebody up there talking and speaking with the prestige he has, and then you think the main thing that stuck in my head is don't give up. They go with proof they've achieved and with an important message to start them on their way. Paula Tubman, Channel 32 News in Danville.
