Man arrested after Sylacauga police officer thrown from vehicle, run over during traffic stop
A Sylacauga police officer is recovering after an attempted traffic stop over the weekend left him with several broken bones.On Saturday, Aug. 12, an unnamed officer attempted to stop a vehicle driven by 43-year-old Corie Darius Burns, according to the Sylacauga Police Department.Burns reportedly resisted arrest and a struggle ensued, with the SPD officer entering Burns' vehicle.During the struggle, Burns regained control of the vehicle and sped off, throwing the officer from inside and running him over in the process.Additional officers chased Burns until he crashed into a tree, after which he was taken into custody.Burns was arrested and charged with second-degree assault and possession of marijuana. He is currently being held in Talladega County Jail on a $75,000 bond.The injured officer suffered broken bones in his left arm, left elbow, and left ankle where the vehicle ran him over.He will remain out of work for an extended period of time as he heals from his injuries.
