Many gather to pay respect to former President Jimmy Carter

HIS FUNERAL SERVICES ARE CONTINUING TODAY IN ATLANTA. AND THAT’S WHERE WE FIND WVTM 13. JARVIS ROBERTSON, WHO JOINS US THERE FROM THE CARTER PRESIDENTIAL CENTER. GOOD MORNING. JARVIS. YEAH. GOOD MORNING TO YOU. MAGDALA. YOU CAN SEE RIGHT HERE BEHIND ME THERE ARE SOME PEOPLE WHO JUST WALKED OUT OF THE CARTER PRESIDENTIAL CENTER. THEY DID TAKE A PICTURE OF THE SIGN HERE AS WELL. IN FRONT OF THAT SIGN. WE ARE SEEING A LOT OF THINGS FROM FLOWERS, A BOTTLE OF PEANUTS, HARD HATS, BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT HE SPENT A LOT OF TIME BUILDING HOMES WITH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY. NOW PEOPLE REALLY WANTING TO JUST POUR IN AND PAY THEIR RESPECTS FOR THE FORMER PRESIDENT, JIMMY CARTER. NOW THERE IS CURRENTLY A 24 HOUR PUBLIC VISITATION OF THE CASKET, AND PEOPLE HAVE BEEN STEADILY ROLLING IN THIS MORNING VIA BUS. NOW, WE GOT HERE A LITTLE AFTER 4:00 THIS MORNING JUST TO MAKE SURE WE WERE EARLY, JUST TO SEE WHAT WOULD BE HAPPENING HERE. THE PEOPLE WHO ARE COMING, THEY CAN’T PARK ON SITE, THEY HAVE TO PARK OFF SITE AND THE MOTOR BUS TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM HERE IN ATLANTA. THEY ARE BUSSING THEM IN TO THE CARTER PRESIDENTIAL CENTER. THAT IS. EXCUSE ME. NOW, I CAN TELL YOU THE PROCESS OF GETTING HERE HAS BEEN ONE FILLED WITH A LOT OF DIGNITY AND HONOR FOR PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER. HIS BODY CAME FROM PLAINS YESTERDAY, STARTING IN AMERICUS, GEORGIA, THEN GOING TO PLAINS, THEN COMING HERE 3.5 HOURS TO ATLANTA, GEORGIA. NOW WE’VE SEEN BELL RINGING. WE’VE SEEN PEOPLE HOLDING UP SIGNS ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, ALL JUST TO HONOR AND AGAIN PAY THEIR RESPECTS. THE BODY WILL DEPART HERE FROM THE CARTER PRESIDENTIAL CENTER TOMORROW MORNING. IT’S GOING TO HEAD TO WASHINGTON. AND ONCE IT GETS TO WASHINGTON, THEN THERE’S GOING TO BE ANOTHER SERVICE. ALSO ON THURSDAY, THERE WILL BE ANOTHER SERVICE AS WELL. THAT DAY. PRESIDENT BIDEN HAS DECLARED A NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING. SO AFTER THAT SERVICE, THE BODY WILL THEN COME BACK HERE TO GEORGIA, WHERE IT’S GOING TO GO BACK TO PLAINS AGAIN. THAT IS WHERE JIMMY CARTER IS FROM. WE KNOW THAT THERE’S GOING TO BE A PRIVATE SERVICE THAT’S GOING TO BE HELD AT MARANATHA BAPTIST CHURCH. AGAIN, THAT IS WHERE PRESIDENT CARTER SPENT 40 YEARS TEACHING SUNDAY SCHOOL. AND I HAVE TO SAY, MAGDALA, I HAD A CHANCE TO GO TO ONE OF THOSE SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES ABOUT NINE YEARS AGO, AND IT WAS JUST REMARKABLE JUST TO SEE THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE WHO GET THERE EARLY JUST TO SIT IN THE PRESENCE OF A FORMER PRESIDENT AND HEAR MORE ABOUT HIS FAITH, SOMETHING THAT WAS DEFINITELY PASSIONATE, SOMETHING HE WAS PASSIONATE ABOUT AND SOMETHING HE LOVED SHARING WITH OTHERS. The 24-hour public viewing of President Jimmy Carter's casket is happening now in Atlanta at The Carter Presidential Center.WVTM 13 anchor Jarvis Robertson was among those outside the center Sunday morning as people showed up to pay their respects.I spoke to a person who called Carter "smart, steadfast, kind, loving" because of all that he accomplished in his lifetime.In honor of the former president, people have left flowers, peanuts, hard hats, American flags and other mementos at the center's sign. Carter died exactly one week ago at the age of 100.
