More than 5K homes in Alabama without power from severe weather
FIRST, THIS IS WVTM 13 WEATHER. THERE’S A BLUE SKY DOWN IN DEMOPOLIS THIS MORNING, BUT ELSEWHERE, WE’RE STILL HANGING ON TO SOME OF THOSE LOW LEVEL CLOUDS. YOU CAN SEE A LITTLE BIT OF CLEARING OVER GADSDEN 58 DEGREES. MOST OF US IN THE 50S. BUT THOSE CLOUDS ARE GOING TO HANG ON FOR A LITTLE WHILE LONGER. YOU CAN SEE ON THE SATELLITE A LOT OF THE CLOUD COVER IS OVER CENTRAL ALABAMA, RIGHT ALONG I-65, AND THEN DOWN TO THE SOUTH AND WEST. THERE’S ALREADY SOME CLEARER SPOTS. WE ARE QUIET AND DRY DOWN TO OUR SOUTH AND EAST. THAT’S WHERE THE MAIN LINE OF STORMS IS NOW. THAT SWEPT ACROSS MISSISSIPPI AND ALABAMA LAST NIGHT. IT IS STILL VERY INTENSE FROM THE CAROLINAS ALL THE WAY DOWN THROUGH FLORIDA. YOU CAN SEE THE INTENSE LIGHTNING OUTPUT SPAWNING MORE SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS. THANKFULLY, THAT IS MOVING AWAY FROM US AND WE’RE ACTUALLY WELCOMING SOME DRIER WEATHER FOR THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS. IT WILL BE BREEZY TODAY. OUR WINDS ARE NOW OUT OF THE WEST AND YOU CAN EXPECT A WESTERLY BREEZE 10 TO 15MPH, WITH SOME GUSTS CLOSER TO 2025 THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. TAKING THE DRY WEATHER WITH US INTO THE NEW YEAR, IT WILL BE NICE FOR NEW YEAR’S EVE, NEW YEAR’S DAY AND THEN IF YOU LIKE COLDER WEATHER, YOU’RE GOING TO BE EXCITED HEADING INTO JANUARY, THE NEW YEAR, THE FIRST FULL WEEK OF JANUARY, OUR MODEL GUIDANCE IS HINTING AT SOME EXTREMELY COLD TEMPERATURES THAT ARE WELL BELOW AVERAGE THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. WE’RE GOING TO STAY MILD ABOVE AVERAGE TODAY, MID 60S DOWN TO TUSCALOOSA AND GREENSBORO, LOW 60S TO THE NORTH. I THINK THE SKY WILL CLEAR UP A BIT, BUT BY THIS EVENING CLOUDS BEGIN TO BUILD BACK IN AS THAT UPPER LEVEL WAVE OF ENERGY HANGS ON. AND WE’VE GOT THAT TROUGH OVER US. SO A LITTLE BIT MORE CLOUD COVER SWINGING IN TONIGHT THAT WILL KEEP TEMPERATURES UP INTO THE UPPER 40S FOR TOMORROW MORNING. BUT WE ARE NOT EXPECTING ANY RAIN NOW. I MENTIONED SOME COLDER WEATHER. WE GET A COUPLE DIPS IN THE JET STREAM AND SOME WAVES OF ARCTIC AIR LIKELY TO SPILL INTO THE SOUTH AND EAST BY THE LATTER PART OF NEXT WEEK INTO THIS COMING WEEKEND, AND THEN INTO THE FIRST FULL WEEK OF JANUARY. THIS WILL BE EXTREMELY COLD AIR ORIGINATING FROM THE ARCTIC AS IT DRAGS TO THE SOUTH. LOOKING AT TEMPERATURES THAT COULD POSSIBLY BE 20 DEGREES BELOW AVERAGE. AND IN JANUARY THAT WOULD PUT MORNING LOWS IN THE SINGLE DIGITS. SO NOT SAYING EXACTLY HOW COLD IT’S GOING TO GET JUST YET, BUT PLAN FOR SOME COLDER WEATHER IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS. FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS. WE’RE MILD IN THE 60S, NEW YEAR’S DAY LOOKS CHILLY. WE’LL BE IN THE 5
