Coloring isn't just for kids.
"It can be good for anyone across all age groups,” Adam Borland, a clinical psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic, said.
Borland said this hobby has become increasingly popular for adults and is actually a healthy distraction that can help reduce stress, improve sleep and boost energy levels.
"Basically, coloring is a mindfulness activity,” Borland said. “It can be meditative. It prioritizes emotional presence and any time we can find activities like that, it's wonderful because we live in a highly stressful world, and I think this can be a very nice distraction."
Now found in a variety of themes, Borland said coloring books can be an inexpensive tool to help adults relax.
"It's so easy to get caught up in social media, being on our phones and the 24-hour news cycle that when we can take a step away and just do something fun and potentially nostalgic, it can have wonderful effects on our mood,” Borland said.
Whether it's with friends or alone Borland explained that coloring can also help unleash your creativity.
"You can just sit back, take out your coloring pencils, your crayons, listen to some music and enjoy a fun and relaxing activity,” Borland said.
