Whammy Coffee is coming to Birmingham's The Denham Building.Whammy Coffee
A Birmingham-area coffee company will have its first brick-and-mortar location this spring near Railroad Park.
Whammy Coffee will occupy a space at The Denham Building in the Parkside District at 12th Street and First Avenue South.
Mitch and Maddie McEver founded Whammy Coffee in 2022 and operated a pop-up at Pepper Place. They’ve also sold their locally roasted coffee online.
The company plans to offer pastries and seasonal drink specials in addition to fan favorites. Whammy Coffee bags will also be available for purchase and every bag comes with a dinosaur toy, inspired by Whammy’s light-hearted branding.

“Whammy is all about having fun and enjoying great coffee in an inviting space for the community,” Mitch McEver said. “When looking for our first location, The Denham Building stood out because of its historical character, proximity to UAB and location within an up-and-coming neighborhood in Birmingham. Plus, the opportunity to be a part of a community of like-minded, small business owners inspired us. We look forward to introducing Whammy to the Parkside District soon.”
Whammy Coffee will occupy the same space where East Pole Coffee recently closed.
The Denham Building opened in 1927 and is named after its original architects, Denham, Van Keuren & Denham. It reopened as commercial and apartment space in 2019 after a remodel by Third & Urban. It also is home to the offices of the Alabama Media Group.
