An East Brunswick, N.J. man is under arrest after walking into the police department and telling them he had killed his wife.

Ashraf Tawfik, 60, showed up at headquarters at 12:14 p.m. Friday and confessed, East Brunswick police said in a statement.

“Authorities responded to his residence on Yorktown Road and found Marsail Botros, 58, of East Brunswick, unresponsive,” the East Brunswick Police Department said. “Botros was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Her husband was charged with murder, and two counts of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, police said, citing prosecutors. He was being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center “pending the results of a pretrial detention hearing,” police said.

While the alleged killer is in custody, police said the investigation was still unfolding and encouraged members of the public to come forward with any information.

Police did not reveal a potential motive or specify Botros’s cause of death.
