No. 21 Oklahoma rallies late, stuns Auburn for first-ever Southeastern Conference win
Uh, it's just like I told the team in there and I couldn't be prouder of their effort and, um, their preparation and the way they worked and I thought they played harder, um, and deserve to win the game. And I've got to find *** way to help them win these games and it's, uh, it's not on them and their effort today, it's, um, our defense played *** heck of *** game gave up two explosive plays. But other than that, I thought they were remarkable and, um, offensively, we had *** really good plan. Coaches did *** good job with, with *** great plan. Um, I thought we ran the ball effectively through some good passes. Um, unfortunately, um, didn't, um, just didn't execute well enough and obviously gave them the, the points on the turnover. And, um, I shouldn't have, uh, put him in that position and, um, had him, have him have that option. So it's, uh, it's one that stings for sure and I've got to help our team get over the edge when you have *** chance to win *** game like that. Proud of those young kids thought they, uh, thought they played really well and, uh, are starting to mature some. But, um, gosh, this one, this one stings for sure. You can just kind of walk us through the, the decision. Jarque has the big run up 11 at the 33 and, and throw at the first couple of plays and then set up for kind of 50 yard field goal. Can you talk us kind of that through that possession? Yeah, I've got to, uh, make sure he understands the situation better. And, um, and we should have had, uh, runs there, you know, that were, uh, uh, I've just, uh, I've got to be clear with him on, uh, what we're trying to do at that moment in the game. Uh, coach going back to the first quarter, uh, you had the ball down the ou one, you guys brought Sam Jackson in for *** couple of plays. Is that something you worked on in practice or, uh, can you walk us through, uh, the play call in there? Um, yeah, we've obviously worked on it for several weeks and we just haven't had *** chance to bring it out and really the first one I think should have scored. Um, we, we didn't block it correctly. Uh, the look that they gave us, it was *** little different than what we had practiced. But, uh, yeah, that's something that we've worked on to try to get an athletic guy, you know, the ball in his hands coach when you look back at, uh, that big fourth down stop that you guys had up to scores and then you only run one minute and 30 seconds off the clock and give the ball back to them. Talk about that and maybe, you know, hindsight what you would have wanted to do differently there, uh, run the football and, and, uh, milk the clock and take as much time off as we can up two scores and, you know, obviously it doesn't that, that possession stands out for sure. And, um, you know, we should have had 10 more points in the first half if we execute also. And it's, uh, that's the, that's the, the things that possession and, um, and, and those not getting points or, or things that I've got to do *** better job of making sure our kids get points in those situations and those matter in games like this in this league. And then when you do get *** two score lead, protecting the football and running the clock is, uh, is *** priority and we didn't handle it very well. So obviously, I've, I've got *** coach at Butter coach despite the outcome, the out offense outgained Oklahoma by almost 200 yards today. What positives can you take away compared from last week to this week of the offense is kind of been *** story, you know, we, we outgained Arkansas last week by *** good amount and today also and, um, but are not, uh not winning football games. And so, um, we've got to do something different to, to win these games when we're able to produce the yards. We are, we're not producing the points that, uh should come with that to assist. The defense is playing really, really hard and pretty well. Right now, coach with the protection, we fourth the one from the offensive line. What can you maybe tell those guys who move, moving forward to win those battle the trenches? Yeah, it's gonna be hard to win against Oklahoma when they know you're throwing. Tho those dudes are some of the best in the country at pass rush and they've proven that over and over. That's uh, not good situations that you want to be in. Coach. Uh, the turnovers have been an issue all season but, you know, 23 quarters you're controlling the ball. Do you ever get the sense from the players that they feel like they have to be perfect, given the way things have gone in the past? Well, the margin of error certainly feels very, very small. You know, you feel the weight of kind of every play call, you feel the weight of light and I'm sure they, they feel the weight of, uh, the execution of that, particularly when, you know, I thought they were playing pretty free and, and we're up two scores and obviously when, when it got kind of tight, then then is when you all sense, I mean, I think all of us, the coaches and the players, you start feeling that man, we got to make the perfect call right here. The perfect protection gotta run the perfect route and, and everyone has to be perfect on that, which is *** tall task when you're playing *** really good defense. Um, the, the best thing to do is protect the two score lead and not get in that position. And, uh, that's what we failed to do. Coach, was this *** game coming in? You felt like with their situation at quarterback, you're at home that you could win *** game like this with defense, special teams and just running the ball. Um, I felt like we could win the game. You know, I, I, you know, I thought we were going to be balanced and, and we were pretty good balanced in the first half for sure of, um, you know, taking our shots and throwing some passes and, and, uh, running the football. Um, definitely thought we had to, had to be balanced there, but no, I, I honestly really felt like we were gonna win this football game all week. I kind of felt that and felt that this morning too. Ok, coach *** long time ago, after *** loss to Tennessee, *** quote, *** man spoke, it's gonna be *** lot of days when you lay your guts on the line and come away empty handed and *** damn thing you can do about it, but go back and lay them on the line again and again and again. And that has coach Patrick Fain Die, is that the kind of message you're gonna take to your team? That's, that's what I told him in there is, man, I couldn't be prouder of, of the way they represented Auburn with their heart and fight today. And, you know, uh me not helping them find *** way to win that game is, it sucks and it stings and because they, they deserve to be celebrating right now to, uh, Peyton had, you know, obviously the pick six but also 338 yards, four touchdowns. I mean, what do you say or express to him after *** performance like that to, to keep his confidence, his spirits high right now, uh, just tell him I love him and, uh, we'll go back to work and try to correct and, and put him in better situations, uh, where we can finish *** game off like this. Yeah.
