Only hit-or-miss showers Friday, but heavier rain again by Saturday

13 WEATHER. RAIN WAS HEAVY WHERE IT FELL TODAY AND IT STILL HEAVY WHERE IT’S COMING DOWN TONIGHT. I THINK TOMORROW WE SEE FEWER OVERALL SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS. BUT THE CATCH IS IF YOU GET ONE, IT’S GOING TO RAIN HARD ENOUGH FOR YOU TO KNOW IT. WE SAW A TREMENDOUS RAIN FOR ABOUT TWO HOURS THIS EVENING NEAR VALLEY DALE ROAD UP TOWARD HEATHER WOOD AND OVER TOWARD MEADOWBROOK AND DOWN AROUND OAK MOUNTAIN HIGH SCHOOL, SOME PLACES HERE ESTIMATED TO HAVE AS MUCH AS THREE INCHES OF RAIN. IT’S ABOUT 6:00 THIS EVENING WHEN SOME OF THOSE HEAVY STORMS STARTED TO BLOSSOM HERE IN THE METRO AREA. BUT YOU GET OVER TOWARD RIVERCHASE AND THERE WAS HARDLY ANYTHING THE SAME KIND OF PATTERN OVER NORTHEAST ALABAMA. WE STILL HAVE AN AERIAL FLOOD ADVISORY BASICALLY FOR THIS ENTIRE AREA, CALHOUN COUNTY, SOUTHERN ETOWAH COUNTY, A LITTLE EDGE OF SAINT CLAIR COUNTY AND NORTHERN TALLADEGA COUNTY, CLOSE TO THREE INCHES OF RAIN FELL ON I-20, CLOSE TO EAST OF BOGA, ABOUT AN INCH AND A HALF IN ANNISTON, EVEN MORE AROUND OXFORD. AND THEN UP TOWARD ANGEL IN BETWEEN ALEXANDRIA AND JACKSONVILLE. THERE’S STILL A PRETTY GOOD DOWNPOUR GOING ON JUST SOUTH OF CENTERVILLE. THAT’S COMING RIGHT UP INTO TOWN. SO CENTERVILLE, BRENT, RIGHT ALONG THE CAHABA RIVER, YOU’RE ABOUT TO START HEARING THE RAINDROPS HIT THE ROOF AND THEN INTO THE NORTHERN PART OF HAIL AND NORTHEASTERN GREENE COUNTY. THESE ARE JUST GOOD OLD FASHIONED SUMMERTIME DOWNPOURS, NO SEVERE WEATHER, NOT EVEN A LOT OF LIGHTNING. THIS IS THE RESULT OF BIG TIME, HEAVY RAIN EARLIER IN CALHOUN COUNTY, MULTIPLE ROADS LOOKED LIKE THIS. YOU GOT THE MUDDY WATER FLOWING OVER IT. NEVER A GOOD IDEA TO DRIVE THROUGH WATER WHEN YOU CAN’T SEE ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE BOTTOM IN THIS CASE, THERE WAS A LITTLE SPOT WHERE MICHELLE COULD GET AROUND IT AND BE ABLE TO SEE SAFELY HOW TO DO THAT. BUT THEN YOU GET TO A POINT LIKE THIS WHERE THERE’S A TREE DOWN. THERE WERE NUMEROUS TREES REPORTED DOWN ACROSS NORTHEAST ALABAMA AND SOME OF THOSE HEAVIER STORMS TODAY, FUTURECAST RADAR HERE SIMULATES RADAR USING THE TRIPLE R MODEL LOOKS PRETTY GOOD FOR TONIGHT. I DON’T SEE MUCH MORE RAIN OTHER THAN JUST THE ISOLATED SHOWERS WE HAVE IN PROGRESS. THEN WATCH THIS, 1:00 TOMORROW AFTERNOON, A HANDFUL OF ISOLATED SHOWERS OR A BRIEF THUNDERSTORM. BUT THESE WILL BE NOTHING LIKE THE KIND OF WEATHER THAT WE’VE HAD AROUND HERE SO FAR THIS WEEK WHERE WE HAVE SOME COMMUNITIES THAT HAVE MORE THAN SIX INCHES OF RAIN JUST SINCE MONDAY AFTERNOON. SO A LOW CHANCE OF SOME SHOWERS TOMORROW. THERE WILL BE SOME SOMEBODY GOING TO GET IT SATURDAY, A HIGHER CHANCE OF RAIN, SUNDAY, LOWER CHANCE MONDAY, WE START TO BRING THE SHOWERS BACK AGAIN. TOMORROW. SO THE HIGH AROUND 80 DEGREES. AN ISOLATED SHOWER OR THUNDERSTORM EXPECTED. WE GET INTO SATURDAY. RAIN IS MORE WIDESPREAD. I THINK BIRMINGHAM, IT’S ABOUT 9 A.M. TO 4 P.M. WE SEE SHOWERS POSSIBLE ON SUNDAY AND

Fewer showers and storms Friday, rain likely again on Saturday

Expect patchy fog overnight and only a few remaining showers through sunrise Friday. Look for fewer storms Friday, but weak cool front stirs up more wet weather – including some heavy downpours and storms - on Saturday. Check the video forecast for the latest.A BETTER CHANCE OF 'DRY' ON FRIDAY It's true. We expect fewer storms developing on Friday, but there will still be a chance of a downpour here and there that could force you to be flexible with outdoor plans, work, and activities. So yes, there is a better chance of missing the storms than getting hit Friday. Even those that get 'hit' don't get quite as much rain as recent storms produced. Thursday night: showers and storms fading away by midnight. Mostly cloudy with some patchy fog. Lows in the mid-60s by sunrise Friday. Isolated Storms on Friday: storms look fewer in number, but where they develop, they may still be rather heavy Friday afternoon and evening. Fewer storms means a little more heat; expect highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s with a partly sunny sky and a southeast breeze under 15 miles per hour. WEEKEND OUTLOOKA weak cool front moving into Alabama Saturday morning provides the focus for some more showers and storms. Most of us will get some rain between 6 AM and 6 PM Saturday: starting earlier to the north and ending later to the south. Birmingham’s best chance of a thunderstorm comes between 9 AM and 4 PM, but it will not rain for six-straight hours. Expect occasional rain and a few locally-heavy storms in that time frame. Clouds and showers keep temperatures down Saturday afternoon: highs only in the 70s.A northwest wind drives most of the rain south of Birmingham for Saturday night and Sunday; however, a few showers or storms could remain near and south of Interstate 20 for Sunday afternoon and evening. Since the cool front is not getting as far south as originally expected, it will not get quite as cool Sunday morning: lows in the upper 50s to lower 60s, and back to near 80°F Sunday afternoon.SO MUCH FOR DRIER WEATHERSometimes what appears to be a slam dunk of a forecast turns sideways on us, but at least we can see it coming days in advance with this particular shift.Earlier this week, it looked like the Sunday-Wednesday period would be practically dry. Now, it looks more like some showers (substantial rainfall over 0.25”) and a few storms will rumble around North and Central Alabama on Monday, and some remain possible here and there on Tuesday and Wednesday as well. Some model guidance really keeps it cool and wet through midweek, but we are discounting that idea at the moment in favor of something that makes a little more sense for the season: highs near 80 degrees with a chance of some scattered showers or storms through Wednesday and Thursday.Without that big push of cooler, drier weather next week, we see no guarantee of dry days for the next 7 to 10 days.To be clear, we are no expecting a total rain-out for the next week and a half; instead, it’s the typical, hit-or-miss activity of late Spring into early Summer in the South.CLICK TO SEE THE 7-DAY FORECAST—STAY WEATHER AWAREGet the free WVTM 13 app and turn on the alerts for the latest weather updates. For the latest Birmingham weather information and central Alabama's certified most accurate forecast, watch WVTM 13 News.Current Weather ConditionsHourly Forecast | 10-Day ForecastInteractive RadarBirmingham SkycamsLive Doppler RadarSign Up For Email Weather AlertsDownload the WVTM 13 AppDon't forget to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
