Surveillance cameras capture shooting that killed 2 men at Brighton Community Center

No one is in custody, deputies say

NOW. AND WE BEGIN WITH THAT BREAKING NEWS THIS EVENING. TWO PEOPLE DEAD AT A COMMUNITY CENTER IN A BRIGHTON TODAY. YEAH. OUR CREWS ARE ALL OVER THE SCENE FOR YOU RIGHT NOW. WVTM 13, ERIN LLEWELLYN. HE WAS THERE SHORTLY AFTER THE CALL WENT OUT. ERIN. I STILL SEE THIS AS AN ACTIVE SCENE BEHIND YOU. TELL US THE NEW INFORMATION WE’VE LEARNED. YEAH, WE ARE STILL HERE AT THE SCENE, AS YOU CAN SEE. LIKE YOU SAID BEHIND ME, IT IS STILL AN ACTIVE SCENE. DEPUTIES ARE STILL HERE INVESTIGATING. AND THERE ARE ALSO PEOPLE FROM THE COMMUNITY WHO ARE STILL OUT HERE AS WELL. AND SO FROM WHAT WE’VE SEEN OUT HERE AND FROM THE PEOPLE THAT WE’VE TALKED TO, WE HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THOSE COMMUNITY MEMBERS THAT THE TWO MEN WHO WERE SHOT AND KILLED IS ONE WHO WAS HERE AT A REPAST FOR A FUNERAL, AND THE OTHER ONE WAS A LOCAL RAPPER WHO WAS HERE AS WELL. AND SO THOSE ARE THE TWO IDENTITIES FROM THAT WE’VE GOTTEN FROM PEOPLE HERE IN THE COMMUNITY RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW. WHAT WE KNOW IS WE WANT TO GET YOU TO SOME SCENE VIDEO, SO WE CAN TELL YOU WHAT LED UP TO THOSE SHOTS BEING FIRED. SO WE ARE TOLD BY HENRY IRBY FROM THE JEFFERSON COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE THAT THIS CALL CAME OUT AT 218 EARLIER TODAY, AND THERE WAS REPORTS OF TWO PEOPLE SHOT. AND WHEN DEPUTIES GOT HERE, THEY FOUND TWO ADULT MEN WHO HAD BEEN SHOT AND KILLED. AND RIGHT NOW THERE ARE NO SUSPECTS WHO ARE IN CUSTODY AND THEY DON’T HAVE ANYONE WHO IS A PERSON OF INTEREST AT THIS POINT EITHER. NOW, WE DID TALK TO COUNCILMAN JEROME MCMULLEN EARLIER TODAY, AND HE SHOWED US THIS SURVEILLANCE VIDEO. AND THIS IS SOMETHING THAT YOU’RE ONLY GOING TO SEE ON WVTM 13, AS YOU CAN SEE ON YOUR SCREEN, IT LOOKS WHAT IS THE SUSPECT WHO IS RUNNING AWAY FROM THE SCENE OF THE SHOOTING AND GETTING INTO A CAR AFTER THOSE SHOTS WERE FIRED? WE ARE GOING TO SHOW YOU THOSE SHOTS BEING FIRED FOR SENSITIVITY PURPOSES, BUT YOU CAN SEE WHAT LED UP TO THAT SHOOTING ON YOUR SCREEN AS WELL. NOW, AGAIN, NO SUSPECTS ARE IN CUSTODY RIGHT NOW AND WE DON’T KNOW WHAT THE MOTIVE IS BEHIND THOSE SHOTS BEING FIRED EITHER. NOW, WE DO HAVE TEAM COVERAGE ONCE AGAIN. SO WE HAVE WVTM 13. EMMA OWEN, WHO WAS ALSO HERE AT THE SCENE AS WELL. EMMA, YOU TALKED TO THE COUNCILMAN? WHAT DID HE HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THE SHOOTING? YEAH, ERIN, I DID SPEAK WITH THE COUNCILMAN AND HE TELLS ME HE WAS HERE. ACTUALLY, MOMENTS BEFORE THE SHOTS RANG OUT. HE HAD JUST LEFT, AND HE SAID HE WAS SHOCKED AND SCARED, KNOWING JUST HOW CLOSE HE WAS TO BEING, YOU KNOW, HERE WHEN THAT TRAGEDY HAPPENED. NOW, I DO WANT TO SHOW YOU WE’RE UP THE HILL A LITTLE BIT FROM AARON. SO WE WANTED TO GIVE YOU A DIFFERENT VANTAGE POINT. THERE WAS A HUGE RESPONSE TO THIS SHOOTING. I WANT TO ZOOM IN A LITTLE BIT AND KIND OF PAN OVER. I JUST COUNTED ABOUT SIX SHERIFF’S VEHICLES FROM THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE. BUT EVEN IN FRONT OF THE BUILDING, THERE ARE EVEN MORE SO DEFINITELY A MASSIVE RESPONSE FOR THIS TRAGIC EVENT THAT HAS HAPPENED HERE TODAY. NOW, LIKE AARON SAID, I DID SPEAK WITH JEROME MCMULLEN, A CITY COUNCILOR HERE IN BRIGHTON, AND HE SAYS AGAIN, HE HAD BEEN HERE SHORTLY BEFORE THE SHOOTING HAPPENED. HE SHARES MORE OF HIS EMOTIONS THAT HE WAS FEELING WHEN HE LEARNED WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED HERE TODAY. SADNESS. YOU KNOW, I COULDN’T BELIEVE THAT A SHOOTING TOOK PLACE AT A REPAST. AND SO I WAS ANXIOUS TO GET UP HERE TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON. AND SADLY, TO SEE IT WAS TWO BODIES LAYING OUT IN THE FRONT. NOW, LIKE MCMULLEN SAID, THIS DID HAPPEN DURING A REPASS. SO A GROUP OF PEOPLE WERE HERE SHARING A MEAL INSIDE AFTER A LOVED ONE OF THEIRS HAD PASSED AWAY. AND I WANT TO GIVE YOU SOME CONTEXT ABOUT THIS BUILDING. SO WE’VE COVERED MANY STORIES HERE, BUT THEY WERE POSITIVE STORIES. THIS, AGAIN, IS A COMMUNITY CENTER. AND SO ON A DAILY BASIS, IT’S REALLY LIKELY THAT YOU’LL SEE A LOT OF SENIORS INSIDE JUST, YOU KNOW, HAVING A SENSE OF COMMUNITY, JUST, YOU KNOW, HAVING THAT TIME TO TO JUST HAVE A GOOD DAY AND TO TO SHARE MOMENTS WITH EACH OTHER. SO NORMALLY, YOU KNOW, WHAT HAPPENS HERE TODAY OR HERE JUST ON A REGULAR BASIS IS SOMETHING POSITIVE. BUT UNFORTUNATELY HERE WHAT HAPPENED WAS A TRAGEDY. AND I JUST WANT TO TELL YOU, THERE WERE A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THIS AREA WHEN THE SHOOTING DID TAKE PLACE. IT WAS BROAD DAYLIGHT. SO THAT KIND OF GIVES YOU SOME CONTEXT ON WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED HERE THIS AFTERNOON.
