Pelham city receives record $41.7M to remove railroad crossing on Shelby County Road 52
Have been frustrated with certain railroad crossings for years. Finally, now, there could be *** solution just around the corner. Thirteen's Maan joining us in Pelham tonight and the city just learned it's receiving some record funding to address this. Yes, they did, Ian, and they're getting this money from the federal government in my hand right now is *** copy of the packet Pelham City sent to the federal government explaining the issues they've been facing out here and one of those problems it delays firefighters when they have to respond to an emergency. Now, fire chief tells me today that they take alternate routes to get to the west side of town and that puts them about three minutes behind. So they call in Helena's Fire Department to respond to calls out there too all because they've been blocked by *** train crossing. Shelby County road 52 the federal government is granting plum $41.7 million to do this project. 11 million will have to come from all involved. That's plum Helena, Shelby County and CSX to fully finish this. Now, city leaders say they will get to do *** lot with this money they're going to add *** new bridge over the tracks and start widening, widening the road at Clark Street. The larger blue is where we're gonna bridge over the CS X railroad. The two crossings that, you know, continually get blocked, that bridge is gonna be *** little over 400 ft. It's gonna be four lanes across. It's also gonna have, um, *** multi use path for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. We had about 300 calls in that 5.5 year period in that data collection where we were delayed and those range anywhere from lift, assist to structure fires to, you know, cardiac arrest. So we know it's *** problem and uh this is *** great day for public safety. We know this is not an overnight fix, it's going to take them some time, so they actually have to do an environmental study before they could break ground here. Now, there is another benefit to this project. It will help fix flooding issues. The city has been experiencing on highway 31 as well. We're live in PG 13 after several.
