'Please pray for him': Communities rally behind injured high school quarterback

A high school quarterback remains in the hospital after collapsing on the field last Friday night and undergoing emergency surgery.Support continues to pour in for Mason Martin. Whether you live in Karns City, Pennsylvania, or not, communities across the region wore the school colors of purple and gold on Tuesday. Martin's coaches recently spoke out as the school district continues to support students and staff.“He is special. I can’t speak enough on his character, his courage and his leadership throughout, on and off the field, so just, if you can do anything, please pray for him. Just take a moment and pray for him,” Ethan Conto said.Conto got to know Martin throughout the summer when he started his job as a Karns City assistant football coach.He said the support from neighboring teams and communities has been overwhelming, including a Sunday night vigil where hundreds of people gathered on the field, the same place where the quarterback collapsed during a game Friday night.“It’s incredible, not only this community, but I have seen schools and other businesses from hours away either reach out on social media or just offer donations, anything. It's really special,” Conto said.Conto is also a dentist at Chicora Dental Care. Outside the business is a sign with the words "#2 Strong." The entire staff wore purple and gold Tuesday.In the Karns City Area School District, Tuesday was the first day back at school since Martin was injured.Superintendent Eric Ritzert said 10 counselors were on hand for students and staff. Some of them came from outside school districts to help.“Mason is well-known, well-loved by our school community, and we want to make sure we have the resources available to attend to those needs,” Ritzert said.Ritzert described Martin and his family as resilient people and asked the community to maintain hope and pray.“I think as a community, whether they wanted us to or not, we have sort of been adopted as part of that family, and we are there for them and will help in any way we can,” Ritzert said.The superintendent added counselors will be available for as long as needed.“What we asked for the people that are volunteering to help us, and the ones that we work with, is kind of stay on standby. We may need to scale this. It may be fine for a few days, and then, people are ready to talk or need to talk, and we may need to call in some additional counselors at that point,” Ritzert said.A GoFundMe has been set up for Mason's family to help with expenses as he recovers.
