Birmingham’s Rickwood Field has received a special commemorative plaque from Major League Baseball that will soon be on display at the historic park.

The metal marker commemorates last summer’s MLB at Rickwood game between the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals that paid tribute to the legacy of the Negro Leagues. The plaque arrived at Rickwood on Thursday and caught the staff by surprise.

“Commissioner Rob Manfred had mentioned something like this might be coming but we didn’t know what to expect. It’s a wonderful gesture from MLB and a sign that they viewed last summer’s event as a huge success.”

Watkins said the staff is currently deciding where to display the plaque and hope to have it up in time for the coming season’s events.

2025 will be a busy year at Rickwood Field, kicking off with the Willie Mays Open from February 7-9 featuring six HBCU baseball teams competing including Birmingham’s own Miles College.
